i'm not planning on taking up SEO has a job but i would like to spend an hour or 2 on a night but i'm a bit scared ill be doing for about 3 or 4 month and someone will say i'm not doing it rite and i have not made a blade of difference so i would love some advice.

Using forums for this purpose is a good idea.

Remember, it is not always about QUANTITY of links, but also QUALITY of links. If you are just adding your links to a link farm or similar site it may not work in your favour with the search engines.

It is really important to thoroughly think through your seo strategy before starting it and making sure your plan is the right one as well as making sure your site is ready.

Good luck.

Use your anchor text and post it on relevant forums or comment on blogs. The higher the PR of the website/page the better, depending on the competition in your market, a few high page rank back links = 100's of low quality:eek: Then use your rss feed to boost them and ping them.;)

using my rss feed to boost them and ping them is like saying use my light sabre to quantum leap can you elaborate please.

You need to do some reading to understand the terminology. There is a lot to learn and it's not as simple as just a couple of steps and you're page 1. I've been reading up for ages and implementing things as I go and I still have a lot to learn. However my site has been moving up in google, so it's going in the right direction.
You said something earlier about should I post backlinks on my wall. I'm not sure you understand what a backlink is. A backlink is simply a link to your site from somewhere outside of your site. If I gave you my website address here, that would be a backlink to my site. Basically just type seo into google and start reading. All the info is out there.
Here is a link to get you going, from one of the members here

what i mean by can i put a link on my wall is that i have been told that if i have a link on a high pr website some of the juice from that site will make my site stronger so does it matter where the link is?

Well if you can get a high PR site to put a link on their site which leads to your site, then I don't think it matters where on their page they put that link.
None of the links that you put on your site to other sites will make any difference to your site though no matter where you put them. Sorry if that's not what you meant, but that's how it read. To me anyway.

From an SEO,a backlink is good for two things new pages to index and confirm as to what the site about to get indexed may be .The Search Engines are constantly searching for new links to check out and categorize. This can be internal and external links.
Most webmasters automatically assume that getting backlinks has everything to do with getting them from other websites. This is simply not true. Good internal backlinks can also help elevate your search engine position……that’s right…you can actually propel your site higher in the SERPS by simply pointing the correct anchor text for the keyword to another page on your site
Building a good internet link structure is paramount to ranking highly for competitive terms. It gives the search engines the clue that your site is on topic with your niche….by linking internally, you are recommending other parts of your site that are relevant as well.
If you understand this, then the next step is to step out and go about getting backlinks from other sites to your site.

For instance, if you write some good content and include anchor text links to your website, you could submit the article to different directories or a post on your blog. Immediately after submission grab your rss feed ( from the page the post is on ) right click "save address as" then submit this to some rss aggregators " Feedage" etc this leverages your effort. Also go to pingomatic and enter the details of the location and "ping" it.
You could also take it up another level and use Yahoo pipes !

guest blogging is a great way to get some high quality backlinks. if you can find a blog that is accepting guest posts, then make contact with the owner, and provide your article with anchor text links in the article.

these types of links are one of the strongest you can get imo.

but also remember that link building is only part of the jigsaw!

It is worth linking out to a quality website in your industry, such as a industry body. Many people overlook this thinking it's all about the links in.

That said links in are of ultimate importance once the content of the site has been optimised correctly based on comparing your site to the top sites ranking for the same keyword, then next step is to look at where competitors are getting their links from.

If you can get links from the same sites as your competitors that will in effect cancel out their links.

You can find out where competitors are getting their links from at http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

Next find other places to get links from. Intelligent blog commenting is a very effective way, getting other people to blog about you, sending online press releases, article distribution, video marketing, social bookmarking all should be used simultaneously for best effect.

Ideally you will want to encourage other people to link to you naturally, so think of ways you can do this. Google want to see natural linking with relevent anchor text (not all the same), and this will result in a higher ranking for your site in time.

You want to concentrate on lots of useful content - remember the SE's exist to index this stuff, so the more you got, the more gets indexed and ranked!

But the key to content creation on the really good sites is 3 factors combined:

1. Masses of content (at least in the thousands of pages)

2. Related backlinks

3. Authority status

A classic example would be http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ - a very nice website indeed, packed with info that covers ALL the bases.

Sure, it offers advice in a very popular topic, and think its the sites main strength, well, it helps a lot with ranking and getting backlinks.

Note: just did a backlink check on the site, and apparantly it only has 40 backlinks according to SEOCentro - that's got to be wrong right?

http://www.seocentro.com/tools/search-engines/link-popularity.html

anyway, I'm sure thats incorrect for such a website like MSE. hmmmmm

Hi guys forums posting and blog commenting is the best way to build good back-link instantly. You should go for quality of back-link not for quantity of back-link because search engine loves quality of back-link better then quantity of back-link.

I wouldnt recommend it. Just wait and see what happens to you if you spam someone else's web property - oops!

And the majority of blogs are so naff, who would want to place their link on those sad efforts.

1. Google devalued blog links

2. A bunch of traffic-less blogs wont help

Its just a guess, but I bet most blogs won't be SEO'd period, so zero value to be had. Its at the state now where free stuff is practically non-existent, sad, but true.

Soon you'll have no choice but to buy links, this is the way the web will go.

RE point 1: Do you not think that tactic has Panda bait written all over it? Especially for a new start up site yet to gain search engine trust etc.

I'd rather concentrate on quality pages than quantity initially, and not be on the receiving end of Googles size 12s.

MSE has been running a long time. Its a brand so far as Google is concerned and as such has plenty of authority in the search engines.

I'm not sure how easy it is to just throw up a site with thousands of pages.

The web is not search engines

Different search tools for different things. Social is something else, but its not for business searching - yet...... mainly as the audience isnt there for business. Linkedin got it right, its more businessy, it has that slant, look and feel about it - facebook doesnt.

Other platforms have evolved. This began years ago - long before people knew what vertical search was.

Search is getting better, but its a long way off from being perfect, and it wont be a huge company who solves it, it will be the ordinary person who does. Classic example was the guy who invented the impact material for electronic goods, no huge company involved in that - totally innovative and his creation alone!

For new website, natural links don't happen within weeks. It might happen after many months or even years. Is that correct?

Yup, more than likely. I get about 70k of visitors, millions of searches and only pick up maybe 10 one-way links per year, if that.

The free link thing was always a gravy train, its obvious it wasnt going to last, as money is a terrific motivator and sites just went paid very quickly, especially the advertising platforms.

What confirmed and sealed the fact, was when my link approaches coming to me, just stopped dead. Havent had a link approach in 2 years - I kid you not......

Enough said I think......

i just read a article about how to backlink it showed me a site where i could post backlinks and how to do it but it didn't tell me where on the site i should post it like on my profile can i post it on my wall?

If your website is an online shop you can get a free non reciprocal backlink from our webstore directory website as below.

When you refer to your "wall" do you mean Facebook Wall ? If so links in Facebook & Twitter normally use the re="nofollow" command which tells search engines not to follow them - so such Facebook & Twitter links are only of value to us humans and not search engines.
