Is there any SEO value in 'no follow' links? I thought not but when using an SEO tool, it's showing some no follow links as being our top links. Eh? They're on high ranking sites (PR 6) but what use if there's no follow?

    Confused!

I think they're useful for presenting a non link-spammed, organically built site to google. No idea if they carry any positive juice through though...:|

Well they are to the site that uses them, but to the linked site no none at all if the search engine take notice of the nofollow. It's debatable is some do, including Google but if you think about it if they don't follow a link they are missing out. That's like you drawing the curtains on a peeping tom.

While google itself may not hold much for them, Others might.

    PLUS!
A link back to your site is also a link that a potential client may click?

They don't pass juice, but having a few makes your link profile look more natural so there is some benefit, but no link juice benefit.

That's why we placed them to be honest, they're on high ranking sites and do bring referral traffic, I was just surprised they came up in an SEO report.

    Thanks for the responses.

I've just realised I've already had this conversation before.... I really must find myself a darkened room somewhere and take something stronger than the tea I'm drinking ;-)

One day I will have a memory span longer than that of a goldfish.

Right, off to book my care home now just in case....

I've just realised I'm not going totally mad - it took so long for my first post to be submitted I went for a coffee, then clicked again thinking it hadn't gone through. Phew.

Well, it's certainly possible to rank a site using only nofollow links...

Historically G took notice but then decided the big bad SEOs were utilising it for their own nefarious ways, so now G 'takes note', but doesn't necessarily use the tag for it's original intention...

Yes, 'nofollow' means "do not pass page rank". It does not mean "do not pass any authority".

As WeblinkPlus points out, you can rank sites with only nofollow links...

All SEO professionals have the same opinion on the value for driving human traffic to your site with nofollow links. Blog commenting and forum links are equally highly well-liked in generating fair amount of traffic to your site without providing any benefit to PageRank. It is useful for businesses that are trying to sell their product or service, as they get chance to embrace and construct relationship with their visitors. They can be used as analytic tool for monitoring. There are many instances on internet where Nofollow links are considered as reasonable links. No-follow links can often be highly context-relevant, and come from sources that are likely to generate greater levels of referral traffic.

Surely they're effectively the same thing? I don't think nofollow links pass anything of value - arguably the only benefit is to have a less manufactured looking link profile.

Does anyone have any examples of anything ranking for something with only nofollow links?

No follow links do have some value if they are from highranking authority sites and these sites are in some way "relevant" to your site and content.

[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]Google may index no follow links but will not follow the links of this page. Now you would think why Google MAY index this page. The answer is that Google may index this page because this page might have a lot of backlinks and Google will think that inspite of being made nofollow thru meta tag or robots.txt, since this page has a lot of backlinks, it could be important.
