Any way of finding email password in cpanel rather than have to reset it

I look after the email for someone who is completely computer illiterate.

    He's forgotten his email password

I could login to cpanel and change it for him, but that means he would have to change settings on his devices which I doubt he could do

Is there any way I can just find what his email password is in cpanel rather than having to change it?

Not normally. Passwords are hashed and salted to prevent hackers doing exactly what you want to do.

Usually, if the password is wrong the email app will ask for the correct/new password when checking and then save it which I think even the least computer literate should be able to manage.

As stated, deliberately one way - so it can't be recovered in plain text.

However, try the other way - what device is he using? Can you recover the password from that device? Some software still store passwords insecurely and passwords (with the right tools) can be recovered from Windows - often plain text or reversible passwords are stored in memory.

Just an idea, not saying its possible nor easy.

Thanks all, I just reset it for him in the end and all seems fine.

Edit to add: This does mean I now know his password and have access to his email.

It really makes you realise just how insecure email is.

Yes indeed, thats why people that host other peoples sites and email have to be registered with the ICO for instance. Not that registration stops you being naughty though.

cPanel allows access to webmail without the need of a webmail password, if you've got the permissions to change passwords, mailbox size limits, etc you'll also have access to login to the webmail without needing the mailbox password.

Your right however, email isn't really secure.
