Very much depends on the local council where you live.

Some councils are quite lenient provided you keep the sign small and it doesn't distract passing motorists.

Other councils will rip the sign down, take you to court, tear your liver out, saw off your leg or shoot you - slowly.

Is there a list that says which are which? ;)

C'mon, where is the British Bulldog spirit in you man? Is this the sort of red blooded derring-do the British Empire was built on? Shoulders back, stiff upper lip and march straight into your local council office and ASK!

We'll all chip in for the wreath if you like :p

no , what would happen- a fine?

Well like others have said, it would depend. When you say a billboard are you talking about a full size billboard like the one below?

I'm certain this isn't what you mean, but if it was the case then the answer would be a straight up no. If you don't own the land then it is dead in the water. Clear Channel, one of the UKs biggest advertisers has a constant battle getting permission from the council to erect these.

If you are talking about sticking A4/A5 signs on lamp posts then it is a little different. As has already been mentioned, it very much varies by council. Some will simply pull them all down and that will be the end of the matter, some will fine you (often as a littering offence) and some will try to prosecute.

But you don't know until you ask so get on the blower and find out.

Good luck.

"It is easier to be given forgiveness than gain permission"

- or a quote that went something like that. If you ask it'll be a 99% chance of a NO. and then they will be on the look out, and you can't plea ignorance.
Just do it, get caught, say sorry and go take it down.

assuming we are talking about an A board/banner/posters and not a full on billboard as pictured above!

Hello all

What is the law concerning advertising in public places eg putting a billboard sign up in a street?

Don't know much about putting billboards but we distribute leaflets hand-to-hand in London and near the City and around, as long as you don't create litter (the recipients are throwing away the leaflet on the street everywhere, the councils dont seem to mind).

our local council is lenient alright. At a local junction and lights, there must be about 10 different signs pointing to addresses on the industrial address along the turn off. I think its only a matter of time before these get outlawed as its OTT. I'm shortly going to put up a 2' x 18" sign at right angles on the fencing of the site where I work and I'll wait and see what happens. Its a rural area and I reckon some busybody will complain and the council must then be seen to do soemthing....
