Voip- Is it any good?

    I am getting really confused with voip and being baffled with jargon. Can anyone please point me in the right direction

    I just want to make free business calls from my laptop using a headset, ideally with free mobile calls but this doesnt look possible so no problem if no mobiles

    The sites all say you can use a normal landline etc but dont understand how this works. I do quite high volume calls (recruitment agency) but only me in the office.

    Also, is voip reliable. Say an email comes in when you are on a call, can the call quality drop or cut off? Finally, where do you plug in a voip phone if i got one, is it into the router? I am in a serviced office so dont have a router, thats at the switchboard

    I would really like free beer in my local and free entry to the Lords Test match, but that doesn't seem possible either ;-)

    VoIP is only free when you call a telephone that is on the same network - if you call a BT landline or a mobile it has to be a chargeable call. It will normally be a much cheaper call, but it's still chargeable.

    You can't use a normal landline to MAKE calls using VoiP but you can call normal landlines. Generally, if you make a high volume of calls, you will buy a call package - but it's not essential.

    VoIP is very reliable, we run our entire business using it and have about 10,000 business users doing the same - but you do have to have a decent connection. It will not cut out if you get an email. A hardware telephone will normally connect directly to the router. If you're running a softphone on your laptop, that is not necessary. But you might have other problems if you are sharing a network.

    I can recommend CJD, been using his service for ages and no line problems, also the tech help is brilliant! I have asked some really daft questions and they have been nothing bit helpful and fast in sorting it out.

    Another "ditto" here - we use Voipfone and it's a good service.

    There are also a lot of moderately advanced telephony features available - certainly for the price tag, as a few of them are generally quite pricey premium features.
