    Hi,

    I am new here (1st post)

My background is as a Tradesman (Carpenter & Joiner)

    I have invented 3 products:

    1. Family board game called: Play As U Go
    2. Fashion wrist watch called: i60
    3. Builders Tape Measure with built-in FM Radio or MP3 player

Name: Play As U Go (registered Trade Mark & Copyright game play)

    Players: 2 to 6 Players

    Age: 8 to Adult.

Type: Family Board Game, based around Mobile Phones and Real Life Situations (Copyright protected).

The game requires various tactics and strategies (inc moral dilemmas), which makes the game very addictive + great fun to play and appeals to all family members even teenagers!!
Move around the board with your tiny mobile phone playing pieces and receive phone calls and text messages etc...etc...
I have a full size prototype.

    Name: i60 (protected design)

Fashion watch based around the very popular Apple ipod.
This watch could be the most desired watch for xmas next year...
I have full manufacturing costs, from a Chinese watch/clock maker.

Name: Radio/MP3 Tape Measure (patent pending)

This tape measure uses the steel measuring blade as the FM antenna and has a built-in loud speaker.
I have also developed a MP3 Tape Measure, this could be pre-loaded with audio adverts/podcasts etc...great promo or give away....
Both tapes are powered via 2 x AAA batteries
I have fully finished samples of both.

Can anyone offer any advice on marketing any of the above products?

    Thanks
    Dave.F.

Don't think so Dave, might be worth going into the introductions section and introducing yourself fully though and adding a link to this thread asking if people can pop over here and offer any advice.

To be honest all 3 items are quite specialised so I wouldn't know the best route to market for you beyond approaching some of the big retailers to look at getting some orders (and ensuring you protect all of your designs fully so that no one can rip them off and to ensure retailers aren't able to just steal your ideas).

    Welcome to ukbf :)

Have you read the story of Rachel Lowe who was on Dragon's Den with her boardgame "Destination". Story here. Her website is here

You need to research your target market. Are you looking to distribute these to retail outlets etc? I take it you ar enot wanting to sell direct yourself to the public but to the trade. You could try the trade fairs. You need to get some publicity though I think to generate some interest.Sorry not much help I know!

    Hi Blush,

Thank you for your reply and help.

Yes, I hope to sell direct to the trade.

Not sure about trade fairs though:|

I think if I could find the right contact and they see the inventions in action, so to speak......I would be on a winner.

    Cheers
    Dave.

Some initial thoughts in no particular order.

I think the game may have some mileage - could you get this stocked in Hammleys or Toys'r'us?.
I think you have a very small window of opportunity for the i60/watch thing and the mp3/tape thing - either someone else (eg: Apple or Stanley) will produce something similar quicker or technology will move on to something else.

However, if you want to sell to the mp3/tape thing to the trade you need to find someone with the scale and channel to market already - I would suggest finding out who is the senior buyer for Screwfix and trying to get your mp3/tape thing in their catalogue. Or find someone senior at Stanley and see if they will produce it under liecence?

The next obvious question is - how do you find out who these key people are? - Well there is no magic answer here, the only thing to do is to look up their HQ phone number and start asking people for contacts/meetings, etc.

If you manage to get someone to stock these items, your next challenge will be to ensure that you can meet expected demand - how flexible is the production line?

    Good luck.

    Hi Dave,

You have 3 quite different products so you really need to develop a strategy for each item.

Firstly I am sure I have seen a FM radio tape measure about already as they have been over developed in the past 5 years to double up as many things - calculators, levels, multi-tools etc. I think I have seen a tape with a built in scan radio and also a manual tuning one.
There is a market for new types of tape measures but for this reason many companies are all over it flogging it to death keeping the prices down.

You need to decide if you want to go direct to retail yourself or use wholesalers who will lessen the burden but also the profit. Some National retailers are not to bad to get into but then others are virtually impossible for small concerns. If you had 3 products that fall into a similar category your job would be a bit easier.

Packaging is very important for things like board games so how far have you gone with that side of things?

Is the watch actually incorporating an mp3 or just styled on?

Have you yet spoken to any retailers to get any feedback on pricing etc.?

Price points are going to be key in launching any product so research will be crucial before offering these items.

    Good luck in the meantime.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

    Hi Dave

We can help you with your board game, especially if you wanted to create an online version of it, which can be live turn based or semi-live turn based which means you have to wait for the other play to make their turn, and if they do not take their turn within a specified countdown (hours or days) they miss a go.

We also have industry contacts that I will be able to put you in touch with that may be able to bring your game to production if they think its a viable idea. My best bet would be to create an online version, as you'd be covering more ground that way and can always bring out a boxed version. At least then the online version you can get right, as where once the boxed version is done, you could waste quite a bit of time and effort getting the pieces, packaging a gameplay right without working of a prototype.

Thank you all very much for your help and advice.

Hands up, I have sold over 30,000pcs to Woolworth PLC (Tape Measure Radios)

The Board Game would be fantastic as an online game, I have had Mum's, Dad's and Teenagers fighting over the game....we have road tested it 100's of times and I am sure it would be fantastic as an online game, as it is so very very addictive and competitive....

Games4Business, Please PM me for further details...

The i60 watch is just a fashion watch with NO mp3 build-in but looks amazing.

Thank you all again for all your comments and suggestions, I am taking notes....

    Best regards
    Dave.

How long ago did you sell into Woolworths and would the tape/radio I have seen be yours? I know a market that can sell through 30,000 pcs easy depending on price point and patent. If the patent doesn't stand up they would probably cut you out and get it straight from China. You could always approach someone like Rolson to see if they wanted to take it on but I think it might be more of a gimmick than a real trade tool (no offence meant). As the antenna is the tape itself doesn't this attract interference when measuring?

Game sounds good but still not so sure about watch.

If you are to look into the online option for the game do you have the domains wrapped up? I see the .co.uk is still available but the .com taken. Also the "you" instead of "u" are both gone.

Sold to WWS early last year.

The patent was written by one of London's top patent attorneys.

It is also a worldwide patent, not just UK:eek:

I agree with your comments re: "I think it might be more of a gimmick than a real trade tool"

5m FM Tape Measure costs = less then GB£1.00 packaged.

    So, plenty of margin.........;)

    while we are talking costs:
    i60 = usd4.50pc
    Play As U go = usd2.00

    Thanks
    Dave.

Well if you want to go online you might need to rethink your name. As I said the .co.uk is there but not the .coms. The nets are there I think and also the .mobi.

If it is that good you can do both online and off.

Heres a little more info, on the family board game:

Players have to collect mobile phone accessories/add-ons/up grades, like sat-nav & ring tones etc etc..

Also the players have phone credit and battery power.

This game is soooooooo much fun.................:)

    Keep in touch

Here are a couple more of my inventions:

    Audio Beer Mats.

I own the mould tool (in China) and can offer any sound effect (upto 15 seconds) / graphics (80mm full colour label).

The beer mats are pressure sensitive and activate when a cup/glass is place on them...

Unit costs from just GB0.39 each.

    Unqiue Swimming Caps

These are a brand new concept, never made before and could revolutionize silicone swimming caps.

I look forward to your comments.

    Dave.
