Not funny in the circumstances when we have a queue of customers and can't give them change!

Underneath there may well be a small hole near to the back. Stick a screwdriver in there and wiggle it about a bit and with luck you'll hit the release mechanism. Make sure you've unplugged it first.

I entered the first item from a sale which was £12.50, then it started beeping and none of the buttons worked anymore. The beeping stopped but still no buttons work and it shows £12.50 still.

I will try the above, thanks both.

You can release the drawer using the small lever under the drawer. Its at the back, roughly in the middle.
Is the one you've got the era310? If yes, I bet this fixes it. Press CL, then press 1 then the CASH# key in the top right hand corner. Will probably work. Note its not the key you use to pay off the cash!
If that doesnt help, press 10000 then press the CASH/TL key. Might help.
If not, post back the model number and will see what I can do to help!

EDIT - sorry, didnt see your text in the link!! Try the last thing.

Worst case, take out the AA batteries that are under a hatch in with the till roll and unplug it for a minute or two. Plug it back in and the machine will have reset. Put the batteries back in and you will be good to go.
BUT, you will have lost all the sales information and any programming on the till (although on that xea there isnt much programming to do anyway!)

Thanks everyone for taking the trouble to respond. I tried everything that didn't involve data loss and eventually managed to open it by pressing the VAT key of all things!

If anyone is using those kind of tills be aware of the removable cash trays too. If you bang/jostle/move the till they sometimes drop down a little at one end, thus stopping the till from opening... All you need is a flat bladed knife (flat as possible) to wiggle inside the drawer's opening to release the drive pin.

We normally charge about £60 + VAT for that little trick ;) - Don't worry this one is on me. :D
