Help! Web site lost.

Hello

I only joined the forum on Friday and already asking for help!

Not sure what is happening, don't know if it's a server problem or my end. I posted on Friday evening and alpha had a look at the site on Saturday morning, but said was unable to find, (hubby said he looked at 0830 and site was not there and we have not been able to view since. However Saturday afternoon ozzy looked at the site and it was there, also a couple of people entered my competition betwen 1300 and 1600 so it must have been there then. The site also disappeared for about 8 hrs one day last week.

Would greatly appreciate it if someone could have a look, and let me know if they can find it or not, and at what time.

Seems like a server problem silverreef, who are you hosting your website with (and what do they say when you complain about this downtime)?

To get an idea of when your site is up (and earning you money) and when its down (and costing you money) I'd suggest you invest in a site uptime monitor, Alertra have a free 30 day trial.

If the problems go on and you don't get a very good explaination from your host (and some money back would probably be a good idea) I'd move to a better host (I'd suggest someone UK based, with UK servers rather than the US server you're on now).

Hi - I'm struggling to get any dns reports for your site.

If you've got a backup then I suggest you get another host, upload to the new webspace and then change your dns. All should be working again as soon as the dns resolve.

If you need a host there are plenty of suggestions around the forum from people happy with their hosts.

We use Data Packet in America, and it's the first time in 10 months that we've had a problem. We apparently do have an uptime monitor (never used it before) and it does seem to be a server problem, but haven't heard from them yet what problem is and when it will be fixed.

My husband set up the website and it provided what we were looking for at a cheaper cost than UK hosts, and maybe you get what you pay for, but until now there hasn't been a problem. As you suggest though, will certainly look to change if problem continues.

Hi Linda,

Hope you get the problem sorted out soon! It's true in hosting you get what you pay for and its very hard for most people to accurately gauge what sort of package they need and what is "good value for money" (as apposed to cheap).

There are also serious issues with hosting an e-commerce website in the US under the Data Protection Act and other which you should be aware of.

Again, hope it gets sorted out soon for you, I'm looking forward to seeing the site!

Well if all the others are resellers and don't actually have their own servers maybe Matrixx Hosting can host and provide reseller accounts for everyone

Seriously - I don't want things to get over competitive like that, it's far better that we try to help NOT for our own interest all the time!

Well I'm overwhelmed by your offers of assistance!

And as of right now it looks as though we may be in the market for a new web host, but unfortunately on the sites suggested so far none meet the basic requirements which are:-

Windows operating system, Asp.net programming language, MS SQL 2000 or above database, hosting for multiple web sites, and for the site to 'own' their own server.

Any suggestions would be welcome and considered, but please form an orderly queue, don't want anyone getting injured in the rush :wink:

Hi Linda,

Yes we are Linux only hosts.

For .asp hosting I *think* www.oneandone.co.uk may be able to do you something although it would be nice if there was someone on the forum who could provide the service.

Please note I am not recommending 1 and 1 - I dislike them but am sure they do what you want.

Linda, we can do ASP.Net on our Windows 2000 server platform, with MS SQL 2000 databases and multiple domain options.

Is there a specific reason you want your hosting partner to own the server(s) you are hosted on? Come back to us with your full spec list and I'm sure someone on the board will be able to help you, or point you in the direction of someone who can.

The reason for wanting the host to have their own server is simply to cut out the middle man. Sorry it's such a long list, but you did ask!

Linda - I have no idea whatsoever why there should be a problem with this.

In fact if you think about it .. If any webhost were to misuse their customers data on a server they wouldn't be in business very long, whether it's legal to do so or not.

I think thats a red-herring to strenghthen someones sales pitch.

I am willing to stand corrected if they say UK companies shouldn't host e-commerce sites in the USA but IMHO they won't.

Good News - ish! We have now found a new web host and are in the process of resolving the named servers and uploading the site to the new host. We are also taking the opportunity to upgrade the site so hopefully will be up and running again sometime this weekend. Allegedly our previous host fell out with their backbone provider and decided to move to a new data centre - without telling their customers, and not until way after the event :evil:

Don't think this is my week, as two development PC's also gone down, but thankfully can be repaired quickly, and now my microwave has gone on strike :roll: Ah well they say bad luck comes in threes.

E-mail problem also rectified now Ozzy thanks.

Thanks everyone for the help and advice, it's been much appreciated, hope I can return the favour soon.
