drumming up work?

I am a self employed roofer and am starting up on my own. I want to get into working on new build work as much as roof re-firbishment. What are the requirements for working directly for house builders i.e insurance and guarantees and health and safety? Who is it that deals with distributing work (so i know who im meant to be contacting)? What will be the most effective way of getting added to the tender list? Is being V.A.T registered important? Is being a ltd company important?
Sorry to just blurt out so many questions but ive got alot.
id really appreciate any help anyone can give.

I think you've covered it all really you will need insurance, most sites have people that deal with health and safety, it's just a case of getting your name out there.
The trouble is, i like most builders have established roofers/contacts i pay them the going rate perhaps a bit more, but that was 6/12mnths ago things have changed a lot now and to be honest i'm now paying a lot less. If i was you i would go on my local council tenders list. On their website you will get all the info you want for tendering.Good luck, hope this helps.

I would forget about new builds at the moment, not much being built and concentrate on repairs and extentions, get a reputation and when the market comes back and new builds are being built again you will have a much better chance.

If I were you, I would have a look at TED.EUROPA.EU, and see what the requirements are for some of the larger contracts in the private sector. I guess you won't be going for these at the moment, but you may be in a few years and it will give you an idea of what you will need to put together if you do so, e.g. heath and safety policy, environmental policy, case studies etc.

It may seem quite daunting at the moment, but as you become more familiar with aquiring business in this way, and build up your reputaion and experience you can start looking at bigger and more lucrative projects.
