People are quick enough to knock things when they dont work, but after the problems that they had with the site last year, I have to praise the HMRC site this year - got 4 returns filed online today without any problems or with the site running slowly.

Wow. That's not bad at all.

All I did today on HMRC was log in to check someone's tax payments, and that worked ok.

For tax returns I use 3rd party software (the thought of doing it any other way would give me nightmares even with the HMRC site working properly!)

No problems either. We've completed about 80 returns this month, and filed all of them plus a few from December. Apart from the emails taking 3 hours to come back instead of the usual 30 seconds (and it's not really a problem) it worked very very well.

I don't think that we've filed a single paper return this year - and only one last year.

Filed my own online on Tuesday. Smooth, quite good, better than previous years but did notice a couple of blips

Main one was after filing detasils and receiving liability I didn't see a smooth transition to payment. knew the numbers anyway but had to log in again using gateway ID and utr to pay

Also I inadvertently entered zero in repairs and expenditure box.
eror message came saying you cannot enter zero.
tiny tiny issue but seemed weird at time

I got similar problems with entering zero in boxes that I should have left blank. Seems a bit nuts to me. But only a tiny issue as you can fix it straight away.

Also problems with going straight on to payment when helping a relative with a return that had some tax to pay. The lack of integration of their systems is curious, it didn't tell us at the point of payment how much had already been paid on account; just the total for the year, even though you can see the on account payments online elsewhere in the process. So we had to ring them up to check which seemed wasteful. And their "included in tax code for previous years" boxes don't fill in automatically, which again seems odd. Since they have that info online if you ring them up why don't they fetch it into the return for you?
