Hosting Guys - Quick server question :)

Hi guys,

I have an ecommerce website that was built when I was hosting with a pretty poor host. As they didnt have the various bits and pieces installed in their server that I needed, the website was put onto a server recommended by the guys that provided us with some software integration (it works with their software perfectly).

HOWEVER, the servier is in Switzerland.

I am in the process of trying to dramatically speed up the website, it looks GREAT but loads FAR too slow.

Do you guys think that there would be much of a speed increase if I move the site to my new uk based dedicated server?

I appreciate any feedback.

There should be a speed increase if its located in the UK, and the customers are also in the UK.

Assuming both servers are equal specification at least anyways.

However, without knowing what is slowing its down, or how slow it is, it is hard to say whether the increase would be sufficient.

There could be other bottlenecks, such as poor coding, or inefficient sql queries etc that are dramatically slowing the site down.

Is it currently on a dedicated server, has the server been optimised at all, or is it straight out of the box settings?

Has the system been looked at to see where its slowing down?

Hi Ken,

The website is Joomla based and as far as i know is currently NOT on a dedicated server.

I moved onto a UK server and saw a huge increase, ftp is fast on UK servers anyway and certainly saves time when transfering large files.

I think if you are going to host a website it should be physically located in the same country as your target market (for example, UK websites = based in UK, international = USA).

Certain places that offer silly cheap hosting have their rather over-sold servers located in places like Germany for example and aren't as fast as ones based in the UK.

Our hosting is in the London Docklands area, so it's nice and fast for us. :)

I couldnt agree more, it was only hosted there for technical reasons at the time. I will be moving it over here in the next day or so :)

what do you mean bits and pieces installed in the host? It means lots of times your website was not available for visitors?
