I recently trialled Avira AntiVir on a spare computer and it works very well and uses very little resources, so it's well worth a look. I would probably recommend this one over a AVG, because AVG is becoming a little bloated in its old age.

AVG again, also Avira is another good one that picks up some viruses that others can miss.

However both are only free for personal, non-business use.

Avast is a antivirus and I think its home edition is a free version whereas the professional edition is not free.

I had used home edition and its quite good.

for information check http://www.avast.com/

AVG and Avira are good - we also use Comodo which is free but occasionally pops ads up after an update.
Another good option is Zone Alarm's free version.

I would definitely look to use Avast over AVG. I was a hard-core AVG user for years, but have recently found it not to pick up all the nasties on a PC. I was recommending AVG to my client-base, but having found Avast to be more effective, I now recommend that. Especially if you are using a firewall too, like Zone Alarm.

The best feature by a mile with Avast is that you can schedule a boot time scan of your entire hard drive. This means, when it finds all those nasty bits of software it can actually get rid of them (because they are not loaded when the scan runs). Most run-time AVs have to either reboot your system to clear a virus, or requires you to do it manually.

Avast is the easier AV to use.

Hope this helps,
Ben

Thanks for the tip (re Avast). I'm getting fed-up with the Comodo product as i find it confusing and it doesn't seem to remember my usage preferences so it delivers loads of pop-up warnings!

No problem - your welcome. Avast also comes with sound (which can be rather annoying!) if you do install it, just right-click the blue icon in the system tray and go Program Settings. Half way down the list click on Sound. There is a Disable sound tick box here, tick it and Avast will remain silent... perfect!

Feel free to drop me a note if you have any queries on setup / install / config ;-)

All the best,
Ben

Personally I would stay well clear of the free software and spend a few quid for compete protection by using a hardware based firewall and NOD32 Antivirus which has the smallest footprint of any antivirus and is rated as the best.

I agree spending a few pounds on AV is a sound option and having a hardware firewall is very wise too.

I would still ask what tangible difference is there between the free version and the paid version of AV software? With most, if not all providers, it's only functionality within the program and not lesser protection. Therefore, from a security perspective, the free version of AV is as secure.

The biggest security threat to any system is the operator :D

Agreed AllITServices, the point I make about free software is the limited functionality but agree with basic use, a free antivirus would normally be fine, Things to consider are if you are using a free limited function antivirus software and no other protection could you be putting your clients data at risk ? I suppose the debate could roll on forever but I personally feel alot safe using a paid for a trusted solution.

Fair comment - there has to be confidence that the AV is doing it's job.

Kind regards
