We are just about to launch an internet business which is essentially and online market where one can buy and sell everything from a pair of shoes to a house all via your mobile phone via mms and sms.

Can anyone tell me what SEO is and how it can help our business.

Also can anyone give me advice on buying mobile phone numbers and then bulk sending them sms's

SEO is the process of getting your website the organic traffic to your website, rather than paying on a per click basis.

If you think of SEO as the long term war, and PPC as a short term battle, SEO when performed well can push your website forward to new levels.

sorry - dont mean to be rude but to state that you are about to launch an internet service but dont know what seo is ?

how do you plan to take payments by sms?

Agreed, too many people do this IMHO. SEO is the most important part of online business for many sites and isn't given a second thought until after sites have gone live.

There are a few online marketing tactics you should be aware of, the main ones are:

Search engine optimisation - you can read more about this on seochat.com.
Pay-per-click - which you can do on Yahoo!, MSN and Google.
Affiliate Marketing; and
E-mail.

I also wouldnt pidgeon-hole yourself and say it's only aimed at the mobile market as this is still a very small percentage of internet usage. In the states on about 6% of people even use their mobile for the internet, even those who do still use their PC to do most of their shopping as it's easier.

The key to any business on the internet is good copy. If you are launching a site soon , you really need to write a number of articles on your unique selling proposition and then distribute them using an article submitter software.

Have a business online is more that just Search Engine Optimisation, it is very important, but you can also use a number of strategies to ensure that your site is not only visible but that people actually purchase something from you.

I thought exactly the same. SEO is fundamental to the design of the site and should vbe given the same attention as that to usability and accessibility. I'm amazed that the question is being asked at this late stage and if it hasn't been considered it's a little too late as incorporating SEO may well require considerable redign work on the site.
