Google's Guide to SEO Best Practice

Google's SEO guide to SEO best practice.

Enjoy!

Don't forget that much of a search page is Adwords though, and if you're not there that's one more slot for a competitor

That'll put the cat amongst the pigeons... we argue about anything here I'm not even going to mention the part (about urls) that says;
Quote:
The highlighted words above could inform a user or search engine what the target page is about before following the link

What an excellent, useful posting - I hope many people get to look through this in detail, and have a lot of questions answered, straight from the horses mouth, as it were.

Also interesting to see what google has to say about social media at the end - it is the future you know!

Save this and send it to young start ups - they'll love the advice.

That's a good guide. Already noted quite a few inconsistencies with previous google advice so I'm off to ask a few questions.

JustOneUK - totally agree about the URL, but you notice they don't actually tell you that the advice will improve your ranking, all they say is:

Quote:
...following the best practices outlined below will make it easier for search engines to both crawl and index your content.
which is somewhat different to saying:

Quote:
...following the best practices outlined below will make it easier for search engines to both crawl and index your content and may improve your ranking.
They make very little comment on inbound links, in fact the only real mention is of something to avoid:

Quote:
Avoid:
• spamming link requests out to all sites related to your topic area
• purchasing links from another site with the aim of getting PageRank instead of traffic
Still, some good stuff in there, if everyone followed the advice the quality of the SERPS would really improve.

And that is what Google is after. The more relevant the search, the more popular it becomes among users. That will help Google to stay at the top.

Aha, that could be the motive behind this guide. Getting people to do what Google wants them to do. Do we smell a hidden agenda?

Yup, that's why the guide insists we install google analytics.

Did you read the google flu trends story: http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/condi...ef=mpstoryview

Yes I did. Google is spreading it wings. Reminds me of an old song from Real Mccoy "Operator operator this is an emergency, somebody's (Big G) is watching me"

Not a lot new there ,but as others have said a guide for googles benefit, and leaves quite a bit out and some misinformation.
