From what I am hearing, and seeing on a number of sites, it appears
google is having a big algo change.
Very reminiscent of Florida 2004, for those who remember that.

The affiliate guys are saying affiliate sites are getting hit (they always say
    that though).
Only pattern I have seen so far is homepages being dropped, sometimes
even being replaced by internal pages.

I don't think there's anything going on right now, that's worth concerning yourself.

There is a bit of a Google dance going on for sure, my pages are up and down like a yo-yo. But it's highly unlikely to be anything major, just a slight shift in most cases.

Dropped homepages and such are likely to be temporary while Google reindexes.

Going to be an interesting few days.
The odd change like this does us all good though, a reminder not to
keep all our eggs in the same basket.
Yep, homepages don't suddenly drop positions held for years without something significant going on. Hohum, I guess we wait and see - seems my UK sites havent been affected at all and the US one I have has totally regained what it lost. Maybe the algo update is being tweaked, sudden drops out of serps do seem a bit dramatic, perhaps not what they intended

Just speculating here:- given that it hit home pages first before it seems to have been rolled back, I'm wondering if it's a move towards fiiiiiinally doing something about TLD names and their SERPs influence. Perhaps brought on after watching what's happening with their adwords programme given both the changes there over the last few months (the whole quality score and page 1 thing) and the increased demand for adwords since the start of the credit crunch. Perhaps it's just me but what I've been seeing more and more is adwords advertisers bying the exact keyword TLD to run their campaigns against then redirecting through to real domains. And also a lot more trademark TLD names being used for general SERPs ranking purposes. It's always gone on, but who knows.
