Hi Mark, currently looking into your changes you require. As we know, magento is a new cart and is not as customisable as other carts (zen cart for instance) so its not as simple as just turning things on/off unfortunately.
Basically, its a case of editing the files and making changes. The problem with that, is when you go to upgrade to a new version the changes will be lost and have to be implemented again.
Anyway, ill see what i can find out and get back to you.

Magento is a very new package as discussed and it does need an optimised server in order to run effectively. We have done a lot of tests and unless the host has optimised the server for Magento you will see perfomance issues, even with he latest release

I am by no means an expert in Magento, indeed, I am frustrated with it, as I cant get a certain multi-website feature working.
From what I understand, the design of Megento is such that design/templates should not be affected by upgrades, major or minor.
Burden, what do you need doing?

Consultant - I can confirm that upgrades do bugger up (technically speaking) templates. The theme on my store was not the default, and no way was it happy about being upgraded.
Took a lot of time and some expense to upgrade to the latest version.
I'm looking at utilising the multi-website feature, but am put off because of the problems with it, as you have also experienced!

I ended up using a programmer from rentacoder for a couple of the things I needed doing (eg multi flat rate shipping module) who's only solution at times was a hack to get the stuff I needed. Most programmers I've had contact with have initially been enthusiastic about working on the site, until they realise the complexities/issues with magento.

I've got a few Magento stores running which I've developed myself. I am a programmer rather than a designer by trade, so have found the back-end of Magento quite easy to pick up.
PM me if you want to see the sites. They run on NuBlue, and although Magento isn't spectacularly fast I believe they are adequate (certainly I get orders so they must be fairly okay!).
Re upgrades the 1.0 to 1.x was quite hard work, but it is do-able. Upgrading within from say 1.4 to 1.6 isn't so bad, much quicker.
If you need odd pieces of work doing PM me and I'll either help you out for free if it's small or give you a quote.

we did look at it & it looks rather good although I have seen a few issues with bugs etc.
Considering the price its good value but we went for cube cart in the end & its been really good so far, easy to use & far better than anything else I have used

Upgrade paths apart, one if the biggest issues is sorting a good host that has fined tuned their config for magento, it DOES run sow in most shared environments from my initial testing.

I'm using 1.1.6 with 20,000 products hosted with http://www.clook.co.uk/ even when I was testing on the £5 a month 'Shared Hosting' package it worked fine. Other sites using Magento seem to take a while to add things to the cart/basket, on Clook it's just like using Amazon etc for speed.

I've just about finished my first Magento Site and i'm very impressed with it. I did quiet a lot of customising and once you get your head around the file structure and how it works its very easy if you know a bit of html / css.
The features on it are head and shoulders above the rest of the open source eCommerce platforms. The only downside is it can be a bit slow at times.

Magento have a post on their site about speed, even they recognise that it will run slow without some tweaks to the server. I have just set up a demo store and speed is an issue. Specially with ecommerce sites. if it slow to add to cart etc you will loose customers. We use x cart a lot but hopefully are shifting over possibly to magento

We're a Magento Partner and have been working with Magento since the official launch.
The best way to safeguard your edits on the core system is to make it into a module. That way when you upgrade, only the core is upgraded and your module(s) are left.
We've done this with a couple of additional modules and seems to work well.
In regards to hosting, I see NuBlue on here and I'm sure they're great. If you're going for a larger site with thousands of visitors per day, then it's worth looking at xtraordinary hosting. Look up xtrahost and browse for magento hosting.
If it's of interest, we're currently developing the following modules for Magento:
- Drupal / Magento integration
- Password protection for individual products and categories
- Automated update of gallery image products from on image upload (suitable for photographers)
Will start working on a module to allow pick / pack soon.

I think it's an excellent e-commerce solution, there isn't anything to match it unless you go completely bespoke IMO.
