Forwarding emails

Someone is threatening to forward emails I have sent them privately to all their club members. These emails were sent to them personally and as they include some promotional ideas and other things I would like to keep private, I'm not entirely chuffed at the situation.

The emails were sent in a personal capacity at the time and as such didn't have a disclaimer on the bottom. Does this mean I have no protection and the recipient can distribute them as and how she sees fit?

If you put pen to paper its no longer private, as many emailers have found to their cost and emabaressment.
Theres no real write to Privacy under UK law - excepting under strictly defined circumstances, and this isnt one.
In a Business scenario there may be options, but at a legal cost.
Placing a disclaimer on a mail may not give you any writes.

Dont email anything you wouldnt want to be made public

I think it is also difficult as promotional ideas were probably in a business sense rather than personal but you may be able to get an injunction if you really needed to. Possibly if it contained sensitive personal data it could be DPA breach if not relevant to pass that information on.

I don't think there is much you can do but perhaps you could contact citizens advice bureau if a personal matter or office of fair trading if a business matter and they may be able to point you in the right direction or answer your query.

Silky, what is your relationship to this club? Are you a member, who voiced a legitimate concern to an officer of the club?

If so, it could well be said that the club (and vicariously, this person if sufficiently connected) owes you a duty of care.

If the data was some kind of complaint (that identifies you as the complainer) then probably covered by DPA98.
