Paypal is free in that there are no monthly fees. However their transactions fees near 4%, whereas if you have a customer paying by debit card then a payment processor & merchant account would charge you in the region of 35p.
It depends on the value of your average tranaction, If you're selling things for £400, then £16 is a lot to loose per sale, as opposed to 35p.
If you're selling things for for £4, then paypal's fees are going to be 36p.
It also depends on the volume of transaction you're looking to put through.

Thanks guys.
My payment will be for a service as opposed to a product and will be a flat fee of around £50. I just want the give a professional look as it will be businesses who will be purchasing the service.
I know paypal has come on alot over the past few years, looks much better than it used to and customers dont need to have a paypal account anymore but how do you business owners perceive paypal as a payment processor?

Take a look at http://www.nochex.com/merchant-account/ their merchant account is quite good from looking it over, We haven't taken the option yet but since enquiring they have emailed us twice offerring us a discount on the sign-up fee, First we got an email saying £35 then last week we got a personal email from an account manager for £20.
The fee's look quite good as well, We currently only have PayPal plugged into our billing system right now but will be adding nochex and possibly worldpay in the future.

I'd second this. I have a pet products site and approx. half the clients buying through the site use Nochex. Cheaper fees than PayPal as well

Boots, Harrods, BHS, New Look, Ladbrokes, Sony Ericsson and dozens more big names all use it - why not you?
Do you think they withhold money for up to 6 months from these customers, or is that something that they save strictly for us smaller companies.
