Credit Card payments online

Hi

this will probably sound like a very rudimentary question to most of you but perhaps you could enlighten me on the following:

At the moment I can only accept payment for goods on my website by Paypal of cheque/postal order etc. my question is, what is the procedure for applying to be able to take Visa and Mastercard payments?, ie: who do I contact in the first instance?, what are the charges for having the service?, is there a certain threshold needed? etc etc. Any advice you can offer would be great.

Thanks

Hi, all PayPal payments can be funded with a Visa or Mastercard as well as American Express etc.. You are already offering the service, you can advertise it by using images such as http://cybamart.com/ppb.jpg rather than just the PayPal logo by itself. The majority of PayPal payments are funded by credit and debit cards rather than PayPal funds, you will only be able to accept them if you have a Premier or Business PayPal account though so if you have a personal account, upgrade and you will be able to take Visa, Mastercard et al immediately.

Like Matthew says, it depends on turnover, to justify the move. However, not everyone likes Paypal and it will certainly increase your sales. I offer Paypal and card payments through protx. A third goes through Paypal and the rest through Protx.

Assuming you have a business bank account (if you haven't then ignore what follows),you can open a merchant account with Streamline and use protx as the card processor on your website.

If you are a member of the FSB, you get preferential rates with Streamline.

thanks very much for the feedback so far, I'm looking at all the suggestions at the moment.
JustB - Streamline only give details of their charges after you fill out an 'Introduction Form', the response can then take up to 72 hours, so, in the meantime would you be able to give me a very rough idea of the charges, ie: set-up fee if applicable, percentage charged per transaction (transactions would generally be less than £50), thanks very much

Set up fee, nil if you are a member of the FSB, otherwise *I think* about £250.
Fees depend on turnover and average transaction value, mine are about 1.6% for credit card and 23p for debit cards. You get the money within 3 working days.
Protx is £20 a month until you go over their limit and it's 10p per transaction (still cheaper than the 20p Paypal takes). If you look on the protx website, it will tell you who they team up with apart from Streamline, although the latter is the market leader.
