How would you Define the difference between Internet Marketing and Search Marketing ?

I think of it being as follows;

Search Marketing = To Achieve high search engine positions by utilising organic SEO Techniques and PPC Campaigns providing good conversion rates via Targeted Traffic.

Internet Marketing = Creating Brand Awareness within the Social Internet Network Community i.e. Forums and Blogs. Utilising site targeted advertisement (AdWords)

The above marketing methods both require the use of Extensive skills and an understanding of Pure Logic.

This is just a bit of research, there may not be a difference, depending on your views.

Internet marketing, also referred to as online marketing, is marketing that uses the Internet. The Internet has brought many unique benefits to marketing that include very low costs in distributing information and media to a global audience. However, the interactive nature of the media, both in terms of instant response, and in eliciting response at all, are both desirable qualities of internet marketing.
Internet marketing ties together both the creative and technical aspects of the internet, including design, development, advertising and sales. Internet marketing methods include search engine marketing, display advertising, e-mail marketing, affiliate marketing, interactive advertising and viral marketing.

Search Engine Marketing, or SEM, is a form of Internet Marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in the Search Engine results pages (SERPs) and has a proven ROI (Return on Investment). According to the Search Engine Marketing Professionals Organization, SEM methods include: Search Engine Optimization (or SEO), paid placement, and paid inclusion.Other sources, including the New York Times define SEM as the practice of buying paid search listings, different from SEO which seeks to obtain better free search listings.

From Wikipedia, hope this helps :)

Hi Cheers, the Wiki is a great source of information and their answer is very good.

However I was looking for personal views, which should be more interesting and relevant to the research.

Thanks :)

IMO, Search Marketing = marketing done via the search engines i.e. ppc or seo.

Internet Marketing = Creating Brand Awareness within the Social Internet Network Community i.e. Forums and Blogs. Utilising site targeted advertisement (AdWords)

Internet Marketing = marketing done on the internet

The above marketing methods both require the use of Extensive skills and an understanding of Pure Logic.

Would you like to explain what you mean by "extensive skills" and "pure logic"?

Would agree with others that search marketing is a subset of internet marketing which indeed would be a subset of your overall marketing.

Likewise activity in one may well impact the other - whilst you may list in a directory for SEO purposes there are chances you will get direct hits from it too.

Both require the use of skills but not certain I would agree with the understanding of pure logic. Marketing generally is looked at as an art rather than science and as such there is the human element that removes things from a pure logic arena

I would agree with most of the others that internet marketing or online marketing (the term i prefer) covers all marketing activities on the net no matter what they may be and search marketing is SEO/PPC.

Cheers Guys,

Steve: Extensive Skills means Thorough Knowledge and Pure Logic simply means understanding the Fact, that if you provide Quality content Optimized with relevant keywords you should enhance your Internet Presence.

I've no idea what that means.

Most of the terms you chose to capitalise have no agreed meaning in the real world. For example, "thorough knowledge", "quality content" or "internet presence".

Just a bunch of buzzwords, to be honest.

This looks just like an attempt to get text rich back-links to your site. You've failed to mention where affiliate marketing and price comparison systems fit it into your [not-so] in-depth research of internet marketing.

Come on if your gonna go to such lengths at least make it informative.

I think you may want to consider that ..Web Page One - was opening this thread and the question therein for 'considered' debate.

As mentioned by many lately, It would be far more productive if all members could keep in mind being less 'abrasive' in replying to other members posts.

Its all gravy:)

I love gravy (especially home made the old way).

When the question was posed, I understood it to be a direct question of understanding where the two separate. (not the gravies - i'm not talking gravy anymore). When it comes to the affiliate programs and price comparison sites, they are further sub-divisions of internet marketing. In both cases, those companies are likely to carry out search marketing to make their own sites more predominent, however, they are not search marketing for your company, but part of your internet/online marketing strategy (which may also include banners, e-mail shots, etc). The 'search' part of your marketing is specific to what you do to appear in search engine listings - PPC/SEO ultimately.

Back onto gravy - anyone here like pie barms and pea wet? I prefer them with gravy - never understood pea wet (why would you do that to perfectly good food?).
