request a quote / commerce system

I am looking at implementing a two-tiered commerce system, where:

  1. online transactions can be made via a payment gateway as normal for one range of items
  2. a "request quote" system can be set up instead of a payment gateway for a different range of products (which carry a variable rate of discount based on quantity and other factors).
The "request quote" system would not display prices per item, and the item(s) selected by the shopper would be sent via email to a sales specialist for processing.

The shopping system itself might be a registered users only for payment gateways and general public for the "request quote" system.

has anyone ever achieved anything along these lines and, if so, which product(s) were most appropriate ?

This is an area that is very current for us.

We are currently developing 2 national multi tiered, multi segregated online systems for clients.

It is a very worthwhile product and delievers excellent convinience and service for customers as well as reducing/speeding up the sales process.

We've developed some pretty amazing ecommerce systems… one store we have developed is only open for ecommerce sales on a Friday… they use this day to sell excess items, seconds, etc… online… the rest of the time the website generates leads for their sales executives… it does this and here is the clever part as the company has sales people based all around the country it takes a customers postcode and delivers the enquiry to the main company office and also to the appropriate sales person… who receives the enquiry and will respond via a telephone call within an hour.

Another Website we are developing works along the lines of general customers and wholesale type customers… wholesale customers have discounts set by the company and these vary from wholesaler to wholesaler however once they login to the website they can view and place orders instantly with all prices shown having been discounted to suit each wholesaler.

We've also built in different levels of access for wholesale customers… for instance an accounts department of a large wholesalers might need to access the accounts information on the website and generate invoices, etc… for payment… so we give this group access to this area… they cannot place orders simply review them and make payment… which leads on to credit control… we have also set up system using traditional 30/60/90 day credit accounts… the website allows wholesalers to spend up to their credit limit and then only place pending orders… with accounts in both companies flagged to chase/make payment when this level is reached.

Of course I'm simplifying things an awful lot… and we've done lots more… however I think you get the idea… it is possible to do almost anything that is required provided you have the budget to allow it and as to products it can be almost anything.

each of these deals with General public as one price and payment gateway, and also has Trade Accounts payment gateway and quote, Prism site also has direct interface from Trade Customers systems (Sage Line 50 + others) through ecommerce validation and upload to Prism Sage MMS System -
