Google's Supplementary Results: Will they affect organic traffic?

Hi Guys,

This is a bit of a long one, so I may lose you on this one, but I will try and make it as clear as possible. My site is due to launch later this year when hopefully we will have a good amount of traffic from the search engines.

A concern of mine is the supplementary results in Google. In Google, if you go and type in ‘site:neatdesignerclothing.co.uk’ it will bring up the pages from my site which is in the Google index. From this you can see there is 72 pages in the Google index, however only 10 of these pages show, which means 62 pages of my site is in the supplementary results.

This concerns me because it is often said that the pages in the supplementary results will rarely appear in the search engines results as supplementary results are seen by Google as secondary pages. For example, all my product pages are in the supplementary results, which is a concern. One of the major causes of supplementary results is duplicate content.

To try and get these pages out of the supplementary results we have made the following changes: unique title tags on all pages, made the URL’s search engine friendly and inserted a short paragraph on the brands product pages. Still they remain in the supplementary results so I am now going to rewrite all the meta descriptions and keywords for the products to ensure they are unique and also get incoming links to the brands product pages. I guess this is a problem that many e-commerce sites have as having a standard template will mean there is a certain extent of duplicate content.

I would like to know if there are any other ways which I may be able to get my product pages out of the supplementary results? Or if other people have experiences with their site results showing in supplementary results. Also they you think having pages within the supplementary results will affect my organic traffic?

Thanks,

Darrell :)

Are you sup pages from the non www. (site name)? If so it's a concanical issue.

If you are on Apache servers you can 301 OR IIS global.asa

<script language="VBScript" RUNAT="SERVER">
Sub Session_OnStart
Dim strHost
strHost = Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_HOST")
If Not Left(strHost,4) = "www." Then
strHost = "www." & strHost
Dim strScript, strQuerystring, strURL
strScript = Request.ServerVariables("SCRIPT_NAME")
strQuerystring = Request.ServerVariables("QUERY_STRING")
If Not strQuerystring = "" Then
strQuerystring = "?" & strQuerystring
End If
strURL = "http://" & strHost & strScript & strQuerystring
If Right(strURL, 9) = "index.asp" Then
strURL = "http://" & strHost
End If
Response.Status="301 Moved Permanently"
Response.AddHeader "Location", strURL
End If
Session.Abandon
End Sub
</script>

Is that right technical bods?

Perhaps. See below.

Or if other people have experiences with their site results showing in supplementary results.

A bit. :D

(that's an injoke with a couple of people here - the serious answer is "a lot")

you think having pages within the supplementary results will affect my organic traffic?

Yep. Your own description of the supp index is about right.

Advice: one thing to look for is the over concentration of particular terms on your pages.

For example, on the page www.neatdesignerclothing.co.uk/armani-shirt-p-404.html, the phrase "armani t shirt" has a density of 11.45%.

And here's how the bots read the beginning of the page:

"armani t shirt cheap armani t shirt armani short sleeve t shirt armani t shirt for the current season armani t shirt armani t shirts oscommerce next day delivery only £3 95 helpline 0208 144 6292 email info neatdesignerclothing co uk checkout home about us faq contact us price promise delivery my account cart contents checkout brands armani jeans diesel g star raw hugo boss lacoste moschino paul & shark prada stone island garments jackets jeans knitwear polo shirts shirts t shirts armani t shirt cheap armani t shirt armani short sleeve t shirt armani long sleeve top with logo armani regular season range that are released ever year one of see more armani t shirt £39 99 £34 99 armani t shirt click to enlarge armani long sleeve top with logo armani regular season range that are released ever year one of armani's most popular t shirts currently viewing armani t shirt cheap armani t shirt armani short sleeve t shirt"

Which could look pretty "spammy".

I'm not saying this is the problem - I'm not expert - but I had pages that read a bit like this and they were supp. When I "toned them down" they went back into the proper index.

Hope this helps,

Steve

I had similar problems with my online store where each product, though different, needs to carry generically similar information - such as delivery times, paper types etc.

It was just a case of ensuring each product was more uniquely described to offset any necessary duplication.

All is fine now - and yes - do not keyword stff - write naturally :)

O

office man

Just one point, as a user and not a technical response.

When will you have images? i take it the aim of coming out of supplimental is to get more traffic (more business) - i would get the images ready for the user to get a better shopping experience before i tried to promote the site.

Please post when your images are ready - a keen shopper awaits.

Good luck
