I'm just in the process of setting up on my own supplying homeware items to local stores.
I require some really basic invoice software with a place to put logo, item description, cost etc...

Is there anywhere where I can get some simple software for free to start me off?

I'm sure that I will return with more questions in the future!

Hope you can be of help

A bit more advice please.....
I'm full-time employed at the moment and if anyone could advise on the payment of taxes on my extra income/earnings and the relevant people that I need to contact it would be of great help to me.

I'm only just starting out at the moment and very new to it all.

I would appreciate any help

Thanks, James

Hi James,

I second the Kashflow recommendation. I honestly believe you won't find anything better suited to your needs right now.

Re. starting up, I'm sure an expert will advise properly, but off the top of my head: you need to inform the tax office that you're trading (I think within three months of starting) and you need to set up your National Insurance contributions (eight or so quid a month - I say without checking my bank statement! But thereabouts).

Depending on how good you are with figures, etc. you might want to consider finding a local accountant to deal with your inevitable tax return. Usually worth far more to you in savings than the amount you will pay them - although that's a hot topic on here and others will disagree. I use one just for my self-assessment return.

Hope that's of some use...

Cheers

Well, I'm not sure what the level of it is, but Kashflow had some stock management features added recently, so it's probably still ideal for a small business. I haven't looked at these features though, as I don't need them.

Here we go, if it's any help, this is what Kashflow has to say about its stock management features (I'm not on commission, by the way :)):

The stock management system in KashFlow allows you to track the quantity you have in stock of any particular product(s).

You will need to enable Stock Management from the Products & Services page before you can take advantage of these features.

For each product in your list of products and services, you can tick a box to indicate that you would like to track the stock levels of this item. You can then enter the quantity you currently have in stock. You're also able to enter a value to tell us when you would like us to warn you that stock levels are running low.

When adding an item to an invoice you will be able to tell the stock status of your products by looking the color of the item in your drop-down list .

Whenever you add, edit or delete an item from an Invoice, KashFlow updates the figure to show the change in stock level.

Complete a form CWF1 from the HMRC website and send it off to them within 3 months of starting your additional self employment. They will contact you regarding your NIC's , and send you a Tax Return in April.

Do you have MS Office on your computer? If you go to excel and look on the right you should have a window that says New Workbook and a few headings??..click on Templates - on my computer then on Spreadsheet solutions..theres a good sales invoice template in there..if it is an older version of office..if you go to Open a new office document you should see a templates window and spreadsheet solutions are in there with a similar invoice template

I've now had a good look at all of the possibilities and I think that I will create an invoice from an existing invoice template from Microsoft.
I can manage stock quite easily with Excel and this will be a good way to reduce costs at this stage.

Thanks again for the advice

Yep, Kashflow all the way for me . I haven't used it to it's full potential yet but have found it easy to use. There is a stock control element now built in. :)

Duane, do you want my address to send the cheque to ;)

Is this the accounting software that you use Jamie?

It all seems very complicated at the moment but I'm sure that i will get there in the end.

Has anyone else used diyaccounting?

James

I use MYOB BusinessBasics. Free 30-day trial and although they charge £80 for it on their website, I found a company selling official, new, shrink-wrapped copies for £45.

I was a novice at accounting and this has sorted me out.

Their URL is "myob" and it's a dot com.

Hi James. Phone HMRC Newly Self-Employed on 08459 15 45 15. They will set you all up and send you the form for NI contributions. Dont worry they dont bite! You have three months from the start of business to register.

I got free accounting software from my local "Business Gateway" called "The Complete Business Manager" it's a bookkeeping program, it allows you to produce and print or email invoices, has stock control, contacts, and scheduling facilities etc.

The Complete Business Manager, is a commercial program which can be purchased on the internet with an annual licence, however as I said I got a free copy with a permanent licence, all I had to do was consult a business gateway advisor, provide a business plan and agree to attend a short 3hr training course for the software.

May be worth looking into.
