What does Pr rating mean and how do I find out what mine is? I am a complete novice

I wouldn't even worry about it... your site has a PR 3 with an Alaxa ranking of 2M+ with 115 backlinks all below pr4.

If you download the Google Toolbar you will be able to see the Page Rank of every site you visit.
Although it is not perceived as being of major importance, it is a fairly good indication of how well you site is doing online.
The more important your site is, the higher the PR.
It's interesting to see the little green bar move up as time goes by, but it's not something you can influence much or need to worry about.
If you have a five year old site, that is still PR0 then something is wrong though

Your positin in the SERP's is all that matters. People get far too hung up on stats. If you site is performing well, that's all that matters. Don't bother checking, just take the money and provide a good service.

PR is nothing really to worry about. It is traditionally an indicator to the relevance of your site.
Its only real use now is an indicator for link building. A quick and dirty indicator at that.
The most improtant thing is the volume and quality of traffic.
I am worried now that Google insider Matt Cutts has said that PR will be recalculated every 2 WEEKS it will mean even less than ever.
How is PR generated?
