I have recently signed up to EKMpowershop which is a great solution for me at £20 a month and will certainly do for now until my business grows larger.

I have used one of their templates which i have modified slightly and its starting to look great. Basically the only thing i am struggling with is what fonts to use on the site as i know the fonts i choose have to be universal throughout all potential browsers.

I don't really understand the concept of serif, sans serif etc and when to use certain fonts.

If there are any web designers that could give me any advice it would be much appreciated. For some reason my account wont let me upload a link so please replace the * with a .

I'm not sure if it is possible with EKM but if you want to use more fonts rather than the 'web safe' ones you could look at http://www.google.com/webfonts

Otherwise here is a list of web safe fonts:
http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css_websafe_fonts.asp

Here is a good explanation of the difference between serif and sans serif:
http://cybernetnews.com/helpful-tip-difference-between-serif-and-sans-serif-fonts/

Generally sans serif is considered easier to read on screen and serif off screen.

I am looking to use a font that is web safe and can be seen the same by all users whether they are using a desktop, laptop or mobile device.

Currently my website uses droid sans which is a Google font i believe. Is this not safe on all devices as it wasn't listed in the link you gave me.

You can use fonts not on the web safe list (ie. any of those found on the Google fonts site) however you need to add a little bit more code to your site to ensure it appears the same on all devices. Just find a font you like, click 'Add to collection' and then click the 'Use' tab. You will then see the instructions for adding the fonts. You can also find detailed instructions here:
https://developers.google.com/webfonts/docs/getting_started

With the web safe fonts you just need to add them to your css and you're done so they are a little more straight forward but quite limiting.

Thanks :)

I don't think it is a good use of my time deciding which fonts to use so guess I'll have to seek some help from a web designer.

If EKMpowershop is a great deal for £20 then our e-commerce solutions must be a steal!
I still can't understand why people sign up for those basic shops. The "until my business will grow larger" will never happen with EKM but if it will you are virtually locked with your data up there.

To answer your question people trust " arial " websites the most apparenly

I know ekmpowershop doesnt have some capabilities that other webstores have but i wouldnt exactly call it basic. I have been able to create a professional looking webstore that looks like it cost £1000 to be made. Their templates are great!!
You can argue all day about the back end of EKM but the front end i believe is the most important as this is what the customers sees. I didnt have £1000+ to create a website so this was the best solution for me.

When the business grows i will take the next step and get a premium £5000 webstore on a dedicated server but for the time being EKM is exactly what i need.

I'd have to agree with this. For any main content I would stick with arial or verdana. For headings you can be a little more adventerous.

Ok i will try to stick with either of these 2. Thanks for the input :)

You honestly don't need a grand for self hosted alternative start up shop.
But it would be nice if you would try going to someone else and just say,

"hey I have £20 per month budget and I'm willing to put some time and effort to configure the shop myself, what can you do for me?"

And I bet that many providers up here would surprise you with their solution.

But anyway, I wish you best of luck with your shop and I wish you that you can get your £5000 web store quicker then you expect.

Best of luck!
