Paid Gumtree.com links any good?

Hi
Edinburgh Gumtree have only just started charging £5 for you to add a live link to your ad. I cannot comment whether this is the case in other regions or not?

From an seo point of view, is this link worth a fiver? I know there is the value in the link of making it easier for the potential customers to reach your website from Gumtree.

It occured to me that with them now charging, there are now a lot fewer links coming from the Gumtree site. I have limited seo knowledge, but would that not increase the potency of any links that do come from Gumtree? Are the links DoFollow? Are they worth a fiver as a stand alone link?
Cheers
James

Or zero fees = no links..

Why should anyone who owns a valuable website give something 'totally' for free. Even from a 'building up' viewpoint - sites can be built with zero effort so no need to give away webspace for free. So, site owners don't need content - the deperation doesnt exist as much as it did, so no need to beg for it, they can charge from the off....

Somewhat ridiculously nobody has pointed out that buying links violates Google Webmaster Guidelines.

If you're paying for a link from Gumtree then it should be no followed. Otherwise they may get Google Slapped in the future. And so may the sites that are exploiting it.

Not at my PC so can't see how they have advertised it. Fiver though is nominal. I'd see if it had any effect on a test site.

Thanks very much guys. In paying for a link on Gumtree Edinburgh, the sites intention is to improve the quality of your ad, and they want money for that. Its not like its a SEO company or similar. It isnt sold for SEO purposes.

I think Yell.com is similar, you have to pay extra for a link to your site. Thats not breaching Google rules is it?

Gumtree getting expensive these days. £15 per week to have a featured ad in services, and another fiver for allowing a link. Ouch

Lets see - £15 @ 52 weeks = £780 hmmmm, there's 2 ways to look at that:

1. It's rent to the site in exchange for its use

2. See No1

Such sites deliver traffic - that's why they can and do charge fees. If a site can deliver 1000 visitors to you over 12 months, then its worth paying for it.

Those visitors are eyeballs, who may well end up being clients. You never know what comes from a good link, it can suddenly bring you in a few thousand in fees, in exchange for a few hundred - well worth it!

The link is offered so that people who find your well-tuned ad can click on a link to a page on your website which is even more well-tuned to persuade them to part with their money.

i.e.

It's the 'old fashioned' use of a link: to direct someone to a website. It's not for SEO.

If the £5 outlay helps make a £100 sale, it's good value. If it does nothing, then it's not.
