Ltd companies ...'marrying' the name with domain names

So I'm just wondering - you setup a limited company.....let's say it's nobbys tiles ltd. ...so you immeidately go & buy/secure the most suitable domain name

Now while the domain nobbystiles d0t com (the forum won't even allow me to post a URL as an example!) is a good match, there's no ltd on the end of the domain name ....I'm figuring that this isn't too much of a problem? (else I'd expect to see a lot more domain names with ltd in the URL address)

If it isn't a problem, then how far can you divert from the naming of the limted company to the online domain name ...or can you have any domain you wish as an income stream for a limited company? (& therefore any online presence, the name doesn't need to match the limited company name?)

You can have any domain name you like ...as long as it is available. Your company or business name don't have to relate to it at all.

If, using your analogy, you do want to have a 'marriage' then nobbystiles.com is perfectly fine and would be the norm. Having 'ltd' in as part of it is unnecessary, cumbersome and stinks (to me) of naivety and inexperience.

There are however .ltd domains if you do really want to get the ltd into it - ie. xxxxxx.ltd rather than .com . As long as you can prove ownership, you can get the relevant domain.

Personally I think you'd be better with a .co.uk. By far the most widely recognised in this country.

Thanks to you all for chiming in with my naive line of questions!

Personally I think you'd be better with a .co.uk. By far the most widely recognised in this country.

As it goes, I'm anticipating a fair percentage of my sales to come from overseas (particularly the States)....so if they see .co.uk in their search result, then US online potential customers might not even click on the website (they're an insular bunch!)....whereas I want them to click....be hooked in with the 'want it' nature of my fine products, & just buy the product regardless that I'm based in the UK (what I intend flogging isn't too available Stateside)

These days it is more important to get match available domains with available company names. If either is not available, think of another.

    Buy .com and .co.uk

Most of my .co.uk simply point to .com but the customer sees .co.uk or .com depending upon what they searched for.

From my experience (and this is very much product/service dependant) people in the US don't have any problem buying from a .co.uk website. It is nice, however, to have the .com version of the domain name you want to use so that you can in future redirect users based on their location as Talay mentions above.
