Mobile phones and Tablet - Websites a thin line!

Has anyone noticed that the latest smart phones and tablets perfectly display websites - So why change a good looking website?
Speed of load up, screen size and simple step navigation were the main reasons a mobile website was created but the processing power of new phones and tablets seem to make these changes redundant. More so when you consider solutions like Opencart and Magento create mobile friendly websites.

Can anyone give me a reason for paying excess for mobile websites?

Depends what you mean by 'mobile'. We are working on updating sites so that:

  • They show a narrower, longer site on smaller screen resolutions
  • Use a font size and typeface that is readable on smaller hi-res screens
  • The menu is moved so it's always available on small screens
  • Making main call to action buttons bigger and and easier to use on touch screens
  • Making sure only non-important information or effects are used for hover/rollover

The idea being is that it works for any device, of any screen size and touch or mouse. There is also a lot of testing to make sure that important elements show up as much as possible even when zoomed in, or at a small resolution.

This has been my thought for a while. With a decent mobile you are better off viewing the proper site than a crappy mobile version.

If I find I am on a 'mobile' site, the first thing I do is try to find where to click to get to the 'desktop' site.

You don't need to pay excess for mobile websites anymore... Designers create responsive websites that automatically fits any type of screens.

No more headaches of spending more money for a mobile site, design a responsive website from the start. Check themeforest.net, they have some good example/templates of ecommerce or non-ecommerce responsive websites.

Mobile device = tablets and Smart phones (I thought I had made that clear sorry) - Most people assume mobile phones but tablets like Ipads are classed as mobile devices.
The list you provided were the original reasons to create one - but as I said are these valid now. You are now able to modify the view on smart phones so that font size, tabs and button resizing are not needed.

No, not on existing websites as long as the content is scalable and when older peeps like me need to enhance the text to view it still displays OK...

No, if you are building a new one. Just ensure it is coded to be responsive, one site fits all devices hence no need to code two sites.

Browsing a site on mobile data can eat up a users allocation quite quickly.
By allowing the site to scale properly then you are allowing your site to load quickly and efficiently (It's not so much of an issue when using wifi though). And when I say properly I mean the elements are loaded in the correct order. Most 'responsive' designs do it the wrong way making any benefit a wasted exercise. Using a framework such as 320 and up will give you a good foundation to work from
