is 'full membership' worth having to look at 'franchising' forum

I note with interest that there is now a 'franchise' section on UKBF of which interests me. Is it worth becoming a full member to have access to this ?

I'd like to hear from any franchisees that have full membership as to whether its a full interesting board or simply archived irrelevant / marketing for franchisors ? ( In particular those franchisees in the pet care industry )

The franchise forum is quite empty of new posts due to it being a paid forum (it used to be an open forum) but there are tons of threads with content to go through.

There is currently 33 pages of threads, so definitely a good resource but as said above, not used for new posts much anymore.

Yes it's a shame. There was some background to this. I wasn't a mod when it was in the main forum so I'm not completely sure of all the reasons why it became private but as a member I remember it became a target for all sorts of disgruntled people. These were disgruntled franchisees, franchisors, competitors and became difficult to manage. They just came on to name & shame :(

But isn't that supposed to be one of the functions of a forum? Not much to be gained in shooting the messenger!

Yep, but Sift (the company who own this forum) and bound by the law, and had to deal with many legal disputes over the posts generated in that forum, which ultimately lead to the forum being removed for a while, but its back again now, although much quieter now its in the Paid Members area.

I'm not a full member any more, but if all the stuff that used to be there still is then it would be a useful resource, though it would be quite a trawl to separate the wheat from the chaff. But IIRC there are some gems of good advice.

Franchising can be a very good business model for both franchisor and franchisee if approached in the right way, but these are shark infested waters and clearly there are franchises where the effect, either by accident or design, is to exploit the franchisee. Hence the many 'disgruntled' name and shame posts, which in turn led to legal threats etc.

My view is that people make the mistake of thinking that franchising is an easy way into business, and then choose a franchise to operate. It's the classic false alternative selling technique. Much better to choose a business and then consider whether the franchise will give you a competitive edge that cannot be gained any other way. If it does then it will be worth the price.

BTW, I am a franchisee.

I don't think you will gain any juicy secrects to becoming rich quick by becomming a full member.

So if a franchisee decided to post a thread in this General section would it be shifted straight to the franchise board ?

I'm not trying to cause trouble as I find this forum a great source of interest , but I do find it a bit odd that only paid members can see this particular section ?

It was done for the reasons above, Sift had to act due to the comments that were being posted.

I am not 100% sure on posting franchise questions, as I have seen some posted in the general forums and not been moved.

As long as it's not a slag off xx franchise thread then you should be OK in my opinion, but if you're not in a hurry to post it, I can ask our community manager on Monday.
