Netbook Vs Laptop

I use a Fujitsu Lifebook with CORE i3, 4 GB RAM and 445 GB Hard drive. But its driving me nuts as being an ex display model some fool was messing about with the User settings and can't shut the stupid user screen off, and I also hate the keyboard.

Am looking at options for a replacement machine and seen these mini-laptops called Netbooks, but apart from its size, less RAM, (typically 1GB on the Netbooks), am wondering what other advantages they have - has anyone got one of these and do you rate them?

What do you mean by you can't shut the user screen off? Surely its easier to fix that than get a new machine!?

Describe what you mean and maybe we can help?

Personally I don't get netbooks, a little underpowered for my liking but they are a godsend if you are always on the move.

About every 2 weeks or so, I get this annoying User password screen crop up, and have to keep pressing this orange button to get back to the desktop or whatever application is open.

But the keyboard frustrates me as the keys are separated and kind of heavy pressing is required for response. My old laptop was perfect as the keys were sort of lighter, v responsive, but the fan died on me so upset about that :(

Need:

Good RAM,
nice responsive keyboard
enough USB ports

its for business use so it needs to be durable as in the past my laptops haven't lasted over 2 years.

I've used quite a few netbooks and as sambarnes90 said they tend to be very underpowered, so whilst they are ok for web browsing and basic tasks they lack the power to be used as an everyday machine. They will die off soon as tablets are already offering more functionality, better battery life etc

If you are looking for a cheap, decent spec laptop then personally Lenovo take a lot of beating as you can get a well built i3 with a lot of memory, big hard disk and 5 hour battery for sub £400.

Yep, forgot about DVD/Video use as that's important. Think I'll stick to laptops rather than a base unit/monitor. I was worried about losing 3 Gigs in memory just to be left with a smaller machine.

I fight office space all the time, this is what is on my desk at the moment:

Telephone
Truecall
Stereo Speakers
2 Laptops
Modem
Mousemat/mouse

Next to desk on right side:

  • 3 drawer filing cabinet, printer
Left side of desk:

  • Filing cabinet and 3rd desktop PC.
-------------------------

and thats the vital normal operational stuff - got an extra little room for other stuff, but running out of space. Looking at a new office at some point, got no choice really.

I have a netbook... and i don't like it... for the smallest of tasks it's OK... but my android tablet can do things better than my Netbook.

If i was purchasing again i would go with a proper laptop... it may be bigger than a netbook, but it should have a full size keyboard. and it will be tolerable to use.

What is your business? some will benefit from a larger laptop... I loved my 17 inch Dell Inspiron 9400 from like 6 years ago. But nothing will come close to my Dual 27" screens which is what i use now. Thinking of going triple... but not sure i really need it.

My business is in search and publishing.

17 inch Dell Inspiron 9400 - mmmm, nice machine! Used to have a HP 2nd hand desktop that lasted years  but find HP's to be a tad pricey, still very reliable though.....

Might go with another Compaq laptop, as its a cool machine, even though less powerful than my 2nd hand Fujitsu, which is likely below spec these days I guess with talk of 8GB RAM etc.

Wow, the rate laptops/PC's become obsolete is crazy, I mean that's if they last 3 years. 10 years ago, a good mid-level machine would last 5 to 10 years easily, not now as something always seems to go wrong. I now feel as I'm gambling whatever gadget I buy, jeeze, I'm now on my 4th printer in 2 years :(
