    Hi all,

    Aside from what I am doing for my company at the moment (Catalyst) I am also looking to start up a night at a local club/bar. I was wondering if there were any Managing Directors from bars or clubs that I may be able to speak with or meet in order to pick there brains as to how they became successful as my future aim is to open up a nightclub of my own.

    Are you 100% sure you want to spend your life with drunken, foul mouthed customers who think they own your club or venue (and can therefore do what they want to/in it)?

    Its really, really hard work, not at all glamorous in any sense of the word, people don't tend to say thank you at the end of the evening - just moan that you're closing the bar, cleaning the venue after a particularly busy night can be a nightmare (and dangerous!), you can been fined for your staff's behaviour even if you're in a different country, underage drinkers can get you closed down - even when they look 25!, you have to be so tactful (we had to persuade a couple to stop having sex in the toilet at 2 o'clock in the afternoon)... oh I could go on.

    Apart from the negatives, if you're sure REALLY sure it's something you want to do I'd be pleased to have a chat. I've run/owned a venue for a while.

    Can't ask you at the mo cos the work load is too high here but thank you for your comments and offers I will message you all at some point tomoz! Btw hayles I am absolutely sure this is what I wanna do. I love dealing foul mouthed, drunk, vomiting disgraceful people, I dunno why, just get a Kick out of resolving situations, dont want to blow my own trumpet but im just good at it. Plus I love fleecing the people that create bad aspects of society, its so refreshing hehe.

    I have promoted for the past 6 years and have just called it a day. Firstly there is no other way of describing promoting, other than glorified gambling, the risks are high & so are the rewards! but be aware of the fact that when you lose, you stand to lose everything! in my time promoting we have spent up to 20k on each event, sometimes losing & sometimes winning & I sincerely thank god that I managed to claw myself back after losing that sort of cash. If you are serious about opening your own club, you will be far better off working your way up, starting behind the bar with the view to move up to management, the bank will take you more seriously when it comes to finance as general managers earn seriously good money, meaning you'll be able to save some decent capital.

    Promoters are generally like locust, we consume everything, then when the numbers dwindle move to another location which does not fill mr bank manager with confidence when it comes to lending, as your whole business is based on doing a runner when the going gets tough.
