I did buy it mainly for work as my other coat is useless but I will also be wearing it outside of work as it's a north face ski, does that mean I can't write it off?

It's a judgement call but I believe that it cannot be considered a viable tax write-off if you are able to wear it as normal attire outside of work.

Would you get away with writing it off anyway? Probably. Is it morally or ethically correct to do so? That is a personal choice.

I attended a Government run course recently which stipulated that only the cost of the business embroidery can be deducted unless clothes cannot be worn for personal purposes. A farm owner raised boiler suits as a query and was told she could not deduct them. Course attendees queried what could be deducted and spacesuits were about all we could come up with.

That shows the poor advice that is given on such courses. Boiler suits are clearly allowable as protective clothing.

Space suits seems quite appropriate as some of the presenters on courses like this appeat to live on a different planet.

Protective clothing that is worn to protect your clothes is an allowable expense. Clothing required for the performance of your job that could not reasonably be worn outside of work is also, an allowable expense. Ordinary clothing which would form part of your usual clothing cannot be claimed.

My brother works for HMRC, and when he did case work he reduced a very famous actress to tears by refusing to allow her to claim clothing.

what a lovely claim to fame (not):rolleyes::rolleyes::)
