Reasons for running your own business

in theory it would be the ability to take things in my own direction without the need to convince others and then have to go through approval processes. Money would be nice too but I would have to be fairly successful to match my current total reward.

There are so many reasons....it's mainly for me the ability to be creative and go in any direction as I choose. I'm not sure about the money aspect though....don't get me wrong I DO aim to make money but because I have worked in the Actuarial field and quit I don't find money the sole motivator if the work is boring. In my business I not only want to make money but enjoy the process of making it (if that makes sense :? )
I also want to have that sense of achievement once the bussiness is successful and my market recognises the quality of using my products and services.
Also plan on retiring early :lol:

in my case i would say, commuting to the office is causing me a lot of neck and backaches.. so really it would be more convenient if i worked from home. Plus, i love my work, so i honestly think spending an hour heading to the office and an hour going home are wasted. I could be designing something in that time.
I found i work best on my own, with no distractions. time fly and i end up being more productive.

I sell a lot of companies whereby there is some degree of overlap between the vendor selling and leaving. As such, the new circumstances the seller finds themself in are as follows:
1) Pot load of money in the bank.
2) They've shed themselves of the burden of ownership.
3) They now have a big brother that will support them in future ventures.
Now you'd think the above would be a fantastic, liberating experience. However, many of them really don't like the new circumstance for one reason:
4) They've now got a boss.
My own view is that after many years of being a business owner I am now totally and utterly unemployable!!

I look at life differently as a business owner.
Instead of griping on about my boss, enjoying time off as 'my time', looking forward to a fixed pay packet at the end of the week no matter how much effort I put in and the attitude that the world owes me a living I am more positive about every challenge.
I suppose that's because I am in the position of being able to change things. Employees often think they have to put up with things because they have no power to change them.
OK time off now sometimes feels like I'm robbing myself but I know if I put in the effort today I will see rewards down the line.
We used resources at hand to improve our lot and we have improved, a lot!
My main motivation changes. At this point in time I am motivated by the dawning realisation that we really have made it and the only way is up. I am not going to die a lonely pensioner on the breadline.
Also I think having 4 kids is a kind of wealth that money cannot buy but it really helps! I want my kids to have the best and with four of 'em that costs a heck of a lot.
Finally, one mantra I like is, "I believe in luck - The harder I work the Luckier I get."

So I no longer have to listen idiots telling me what to do who have no brains, are far too overweight and have far too much money!
That maybe me one day though, hopefully not overweight and of course I have a brain, somewhere ;-)

Hello all.
At the time of starting my business i was in a band (still am sort of - fo8.com) which was very busy gigging up and down the M4. It was consuming alot of time and energy and I desperately needed/wanted more time to do band duties - phoning promoters, burning cds, printing bios, press releases, practicing, and playing gigs etc etc etc.
Going to work at 8am after having played a gig and getting home at 3 in the morning, was proving a bit difficult, especially when i was working as a financial reseacher. zzzzzzzz
I had been doing web design as a hobby for some years, which i really enjoyed doing. Finally the brain numbing job got me down soo much that i decided to get a 6k bank loan and turn my hobby into a full time operation.
Two years later I'm still going and am very pleased with the decision i made.
So initially, it was just to have more time to do other stuff. But now I love that fact that i don't have to commute and pay parking, or get restricted to working in a stuffy office and have to deal with people who bore the life out of me.
I love the freedom to do what i want, when i want. Does that make me a control freak? I think it does. But aren't all business owners???
