I have always found that Rev share relationships work better than straight forward "paying for the service"

1. service provider gets a better price
2. no nasty upfront costs for customer


Im throwing it out there to see what everyone elses thoughts are ????:)
 
I work with a number of start up websites and in exchange for total SEO work I own a % of all future earnings - Its something that we started to do a few years ago and allows me to work on projects I enjoy, makes me some money and most importantly it helps young businesses while freeing up cash flow - So yes I think its a great idea :D

To follow on quickly I started doing this purely to help out young businesses, I remember what it was like when I first started - and to be honest I rarely ask for more than 5-10% - but with a few of the sites that has turned into some very healthy returns - Its a bit like Dragons' Den without handing over cash, you just used your skills and experience :D

I agree wholeheartly. Rev share is a great way forward, I just wish i could get more people to agree with me on it. :)

personally i would never go into a revenue share. simply because it's not my business - i provide a service which must be paid for. the investment is made by the client - i am not going to invest months of time and money only to find they havent done their research properly and their product isn't selling. sure, if you have the time to analyse business plans and really give 50% of yourself to one business, go for it, but i don't honestly thing that working as a revenue share SEO is viable.

obviously my % is dependent on what you take. personally i'd rather keep the seperation between service provider and client :)

I think it works better for SEO freelancers as opposed to SEO businesses. A business has to pay it's staff every week no matter what profit or otherwise the company receiving risk and reward services achieves.

Its simple you don't rev share with anyone, you invest your time and skills in a company you believe is going to do well - But I guess you need to have a sound understanding of business etc :D

Depends on how skilled you are at understanding what businesses will work or fail - if you know your stuff then you can do well - But I understand your concerns regarding a business having to pay staff etc - good point :D

Classic Earl - to be honest and I know this will upset people, but if you have a true understanding of what works and what doesn't rev share works well - its about helping young companies and being savvy :D

Lol im still lauging at that comment,

I have thought about a share option, and would consider if the right offer was made, but again its about trust both ways, if any one would like to exaplin the pros and cons i may be up for it, i know a few companys its worked well for and some others where it caused massive problem, and if im honest i may not have a full understanding but im open to discussion

The pros:

100% dedication to the project ( you have my full attention as I like eating )

Ongoing building of the business in the SEO/SEM's interest as much as yours.

Cons:

Finding the right person or company.( I.E I know I know what I am doing,but you don't ,and you are not likely to find an SEO/SEM that tells you they don't know what they are doing.) ;)

The person you find dying.:|

The benefits are great if you find the right person.( trust me I know a vicar ).:)

depends where your absolute goals lie. if you really are invested in helping young companies, then a rev share sounds viable. if you are wanting to build up your own business and achieve a strong client base, you would probably want to keep that divide.

Yeah I know the difference can be quite great with one SEO to another

I am thinking do you sign contracts with the companies? I've done rev share before but I think a contract might be in order... thoughts?

surely a contract should be included in any serious business transaction?
