Another link question

That looks like an incomplete url to me. the page is not available so you don't have a link at all.

Where did you get the link data from?

peebles your doing it all wrong , dont pay attention to the page rank of the site and dont recioprocate.

I know this link business is tough to swallow it causes me a slight headache, just start buy actually getting some voulume of links and see what effect it has on your site and take it from there . Dont over scrutinise the value, you cant tell properly.

Links are crucial in how well your site performs. Read over threads in the seo section of the forum and you will get a good understanding, a lot of people on here have mixed views but from tweaking yourself you can work out what is right for the site your working on.

Lots to cover here.
1. the url you have copied and pasted is incomplete, and that is why it is throwing a 404 error (most likely).

2. page rank is a measure of the VALUE of a page, but page rank does not travel alone, nor is it what it once was. A SITE has link value, even though the page rank is low. A site has authority, and all the pages within that site carry that authority. A link from a real authority like a university site can be worth a lot.

3. There is a mantra I have been saying for as long as I can remember with regard link building, and people like IBrian who have known me for years will know what it is. 'link TO and FROM the most relevant pages' , link for traffic and anything else is a bonus. Now that is really simple, but you will be surprised how many people get it wrong. if you know a site that fits well with your site, then you link to him from a nice relevant page, and pplace the link smack bang in the middle of related text (as has always been the case on the web from day 1) and get them to do the same with your link.

4. The page of the newspaper site is NOT PR0 the toolbar page rank value is showing as PR0 because it is not live, it is exported every few months, while LIVE pagerank is updated constantly via everflux. ANYHOW, ignore the silly green bar and use your noggin a bit If a page ranks #1 for your name or your topic, then GOOGLE think it is important for that phrase, so get a link from it.

To poke the muddy water with a stick further, have a read up on something called TSPR (Topic Sensitive PageRank) I (we) know for fact that the amount and value of page rank that flows through links on the same page is affected by many factors, so that link value from the same page can be increased or decreased in value, so, all links are not equal.

Remember also that the anchor text works as a bridge between the anchor page and the target page, so if you can get the correct anchor text on the page that google thinks is the most relevant for that phrase, and get it to link to the page on your site that google thinks is most relevant for that phrase, chances are you will hit the jackpot on link juice transfer on that link.

Links from some sites are worth more, even if the page your link is on is PR 0. A university site for example, is likely to be more trusted as a quality resource than say, your neighbours gardening blog and may be more beneficial regardless of PageRank.

Also, the toolbar PageRank is not ACTUAL PageRank - what you see in the toolbar is generally based on Google data on that page from months ago. So even if a page has PR 0 on the toolbar, it could have an actual PR of much higher and it will be a while before the green juice on the toolbar reflects this.

Getting links from relevant, quality pages is much more important.

Page rank = diddly squat (don't spend 2 seconds checking PR). Government sites are authoritative sites so a link on a page will give some juice (not as much as the homepage). Don't worry about the number of links you have, only work for relevant and authoritative links.

The more relevant the link, the more Google will "love-in" with you. Quality over quantity
