Accounts code for hosting

I resell my hosting, and use KashFlow, what Sales Type code shall i use, as i am using 4001 (Sale of goods) at the moment, but really want to try and separate it out so i can work out what money i make from hosting over other services i provide.

Simple answer is whatever code you want.

Logically you should consider how you want to split your services and assign codes in batches accordingly e.g.

4000 Windows hosting
4100 Lynux hosting
4200 Web design

and so on

Also ensure that you leave enough free codes between classes to add others in in future.

I always thought the codes were specific for one type of transaction so the accountant could identify it in the accounts system.

A code is just a short hand

we don't use any codes at all - we wrote our own account records system and it is all done through textual descriptions - totally your choice (do of course tell your accountant what you have chosen though!)

Codes are often structured in a TB so that they can be used to create totals eg 4000 codes are all sales, 5000 codes are cost of sales and so on.

If you look at the setup of KashFlow you can attach any codes to any section in the Profit and Loss and Balance sheet reports.

I prefer to use code structure simply because my working papers are set up currently to use a standard Sage style structure but will changing it in the near future so that it doesn't matter.

Hey thats superb, thanks for your help

All i do normally is leave everything to "Sale Of Goods" and leave it up to my accountant to work it out hehe.

Not sure if this will make it easier or harder, but thats what i pay him for im sure
