Raising money for charity for profit

    Is it legal to organise fund raising events for a charity to make money for yourself?

    I am currently setting up my own online business but because I am doing it on a micro budget its going to take a while to fully develop. So in the mean time I am looking at going back to one of my real loves of charity work.

    What I want to do is organise a couple of charity events each month and take a percentage of the takings. This will be all 100% up front and declared to the charity and on all advertising.

    I can not see any legal reason why this can not be done but does anyone know if I have to take any legal steps before I start.

    Can't comment on the legality, but it seems to me morally wrong to profit from what others donate to charity.

    To charge a reasonable fee for services is one thing, to stand to gain over and above that is another.

    That said, I well remember being advised many years ago, by a man who is now in the Sunday Times Rich List, to "never confuse business with charity".

    I'm still not sure *exactly* what he meant.

    There will be no attempt to deceive anyone at the events or the charities. I fully intend to declare how much of the proceeds will be going to the charities in all my literature etc.

    All events will be organised with the charities involved with everything declared up front from the start of the planning of each event.

    It wont be anywhere as under handed as my original post may have sounded.

    It's a very common way for charities to raise funds these days and they will be well equipped to help you with the legalities and how to handle it all. As long as the charity gives you permission, there is no problem.

    I am not an expert in charity law but from what I know as Chair of a charity is that the charity can pay YOU a consultancy fee for organising the event for them.

    It should be made clear that the charity is merely contracting your services to organise an event for whatever purpose.

    Hello WelshPixels,

    I feel that the law regarding charities doesn't apply here ... Organising events and promoting events is a legal enterprise and a large number of promoters make healthy donations to charities.

    A local company donates "profits" to charity. So could you do it that way around?
    Charge fees to your company for the event, and donate all profits to charity?
    Probably will be easier aswell to estimate how much you might make yourself.
