Online File Storage

    Hi All,

    I wonder if anyone could offer some advice on Online File Storage.

    We are looking for this as a backup, and also as a way of working on office files remotely (as a lot of our work involves travelling around the country - so it would be handy to access office file through any PC that has an Internet connection).

    We would feel happier about using a big, recognised company (i.e Microsoft, Network Solutions, etc) as alot of our files are of a sensitive nature. We would also like to use a big company like this because of reliability.

    We would like to use a service, where we are not penalised for using it regularly.

    The total size of the files that we want to store online is 473 MB.

    Any suggestions would be much appreciated?

    Hi Matt,

    Many thanks for your response.

    We only have 2 of us who would need access to this. Possibly only me.

    We do not have a network in our office - just one PC connected to the Internet. I have been tempted to use remote software to dial into this PC from home, etc but prefer not to leave it switched on, plus I would like to have everything online as a backup.

    Sorry I do not know anything about FTP.

    That's quite a complex question, as you have 2 different objectives, which might or might not be satified by one provider/service. There are also quite a number of different way to achieve this.

    A major consideration is what sort of files and how many get updated regularly. It's important, if you have 2 file stores, to understand which one is the "master" and which one synchronises to it.

    My suggestion, which could be off the mark, would be to get an "office server" as a file store, which you can access from anywhere by VPN. Then mirror the files on that server to online backup. That way you only ever work on the files on the "office server", either from the office or anywhere, but have secure off-site backup.

    Might seem overkill, but have you considered the consequences for your business of total data loss?
