I came across this interesting video today in which Google' s public face, Matt Cutts, explains how Google actually indexes and ranks websites.

This is not a silver bullet and I appreciate that most people actually involved in SEO will already know all of this but it is a good explanation of the whole process so I thought I would share it with you.

yes, it's like how people say alexa rank is a load of rubbish, just because it can be slightly tainted. pagerank and alexa rank are still very good indicators to website performance if u know how to use them.

I suppose it all boils down to whether or not you believe Matt Cutts. The nay sayers may say that he is being economic with the truth, but would he go out there in such a public way and openly tell lies? I don't think so.

yea, he can be a bit economical with the truth... especially when it attracts people to look at a page which links to similar info about AdWords

The trouble is when people discuss Pagerank they start to get blurred with Pagerank and Toolbar Pagerank with some people struggling to see the difference

The page rank Google uses in its search is very important but this is not the same as the page rank you will see in a browser tool bar.

Perhaps google (or Matt Cutts) are making it purposely confusing and as you say being economical with the true. Like disinformation in the war.

Google are always exceptionally economical with the truth when they make public statements, and Matt Cutts is an extremely talented PR guy. Treat Google PR the way you would any other PR.
