reproducing map of France

I would like to include a map of France on some literature I'm producing. Does anyone know how I should go about buying in an image? I've looked at the usual image banks etc but only found 'jokey' maps and need a proper one!

How detailed does the map have to be? Is it for working out routes and mileages or just to mark towns and reference points?

I was looking for a map of Japan recently and fouind a .edu site where they had public domain maps. I'll see if I can find it.

No need to show roads but it does need to show departments (so probably as detailed as a map of UK showing counties)

I think Robert, that the maps on the site are all copyright - some of them look from the FBI country information website.

If I was looking for a map of a country (which I'll be doing myself soon) I'd contact the copyright holder, like Lawrence mentioned and ask them if it's okay to use it.

Most people will say yes, but link to me etc.

By far, most are copyright free. e.g. the example given above.

The ones which are copyrighted are marked as such.

Some maps maps include the official seal of a U.S. Government agency. Which again are OK as long as you don't "convey the impression that such use is approved, endorsed, or authorized by the agency"

Some are copyright, University of Texas at Austin, which you need permission to use.

Maps and other images are copyright regardless of whether a claim to copyright is made or not, providing that they are still within the term of protection (70 years from the death of the author).
