Search engines for a kids clothing site...

    Hi

    I've just started working for a web design company in Yorkshire, and doing some online marketing and search engine stuff. I'm actually more of a graphical web designer with not much experience in this kind of thing so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

    The site is for someone selling kidswear and children's clothes. Apparently the brands are quite popular (Kidorable and Rich Frog - mean nothing to me!) so is it worth pursuing them or is it better to go for generic search terms like 'childrenswear' or whatever.

    If this doesn't make much sense as a question, please accept my apologies - I'm not very much up on this stuff!

    Oh nice clothes. If they are ever looking to run a competition to get them known please point them in my direction :)

    I personally have seen the items you mentioned in the shops but didnt know their names. I would be more inclined to think you would be better to go along the route of childrenswear than by the brand name.

    Hi Ravenfire - thanks for the tip!

    What do you mean about a competition? It might be the sort of thing they're interested in doing (a big might though - I've only just started dealing with them myself!)

    I think you might be right about the brand names vs. generic thing. I haven't heard about Kidorable or Rich Frog myself - they seem to feel that these names are a big selling point.

    I'll try a little bit of both perhaps!

    Get your site registered with Junior Magazine web directory. This is defiantely a 'yummy mummy' publication, and lots of chic clothing retailers advertise there.

    You will need to have a reciprocal link to them, in place before you request a link back though (they like to see that their link is already on your site, before they will add your link, to theirs)

    Hey Kate you must have had at least a few from me this week :lol:

    Carps, a lot of people either run competitions on their own sites to get them known or on other sites (such as parenting websites like mine that already have a member database).

    Duane - I think I understand what you mean. If my page titles and H1 tags are based around phrases like 'kidorable childrens clothes' or 'kidorable frog raincoat' that means there'll be less competition on the search engines than just for 'childrens clothes'?

    And John - thanks for the number. If I get the opportunity I'll give her a ring.

    Sort of.

    You can find out how much 'competition' there is for a phrase by searching for it.

    Search Google for 'kidorable childrens clothes', it reports 97,000 results. This is how many other pages you are competing with for this traffic.

    Now do the same for 'childrens clothes' and there are over 2 million pages.

    So, becuase of the lack of competition for the first phrase, it'd be a lot easier to get the #1 spot for that than it would be for the latter phrase.
