Viral marketing

Great newsletter Andy!

I used to get taxi's alot and when I was in the cab, I used to chat to the driver about my business, and handed him a pen and business card.

.. for months after I give him the card, I had people calling me about advertising their holiday home, or booking a holiday home... all from that one tax driver.

Everytime he spoke to someone about holidays, he told them about my website.

Which reminds me I need to get a taxi again soon, and go armed with a pen and business card

Cheers Darren, nice to get positive feedback. I try and make them alot less propaganda orientated than some others on the market, yet secretly we all know mine are propaganda too!

Taxi's are ace for getting business, either from the business card angle or just from a profile raising point of view from advertising on them...

Something people may be interested in... there is a new taxi levery company come onto the market called Cabvert.

OK, so they are not that new but they have shook up prices and as a result the cost of taxi livery and advertising has dropped loads.

I was chatting to a London cabbie the other day about this and he was saying he got paid only £750 for his livery for one year. A few years ago you could expect to pay in the region of £2kplus.

Regionally this is the same, I know cabbie by us who will do a year for only £250-£500. The only other cost is then getting the livery done... oh and I know a company that can do that :D

Just thought I'd poke my nose in here :)

The thing with viral marketing is to remember that having the great idea is only a small part of the campaign - it will only work if you have really good seeding (getting the distribution going), and even then you need to have good tracking to ensure you can prove it has delivered what you wanted it to.

Viral campaigns are really good for name awareness but you need to really understand viral marketing and the sort of things you can achieve in order to get the results you want from it. For example, unless you know if you want direct sales from it or just want to get your name more exposure you could end up with a wishy washy campaign.

This forum works as viral marketing.

Example. Person 1 posts..."I need A Pr company"

Person 2 posts " I use and recommend XYZ from the forum"

Person 1 then uses them.

XYZ now have 2 people who will recommend them...and so the cycle begins again...Both on here and other forums/offline communities that Person 1 and 2 are members of. This then grows and you end up with 2/4/6/8/12 people promoting you.

This is really word of mouth marketing,.

It works!

Just think about it, did google, or hotmail ever have to advertise. NO, they just provided a great service and product to the market, and all the techno geeks of the time just went mad and told each other....then it was cool to be techno geeks so we all jumped on board...

Now they are 2 of the biggest websites online..........

hmm,

my understanding of viral marketing would be different to a couple of the examples above.

I used an 'exclusive voucher' system which was then placed in such a way that people thought they were getting something for a discounted price only available to a few people, this was then dropped into an email and people forwarded on for their own benefit, marketing my site.

To me this is viral marketing.

Mike do you have a million people or there abouts visiting your site?
No, but the number of visitors is rising each month, and will continue to rise ad infinitum.

And what site are they visiting - out of interest?

The site I am currently promoting is http://wfh.techfox.co.uk/
