site reconsideration request

    well, my vanished website was submitted to Google for reconsideration a week ago and Google have replied that they have processed the request and they say this

    "We've now reviewed your site. When we review a site, we check to see if it's in violation of our Webmaster Guidelines. If we don't find any problems, we'll reconsider our indexing of your site. If your site still doesn't appear in our search results....

    so now they say they're reviewed it, does anyone know what happens now and over what timescale? According to webmaster tools, no problems with the site were found..

    nope, I did nothing at all apart from publish a temporary blog page on a seperate wordpress site (url www.mysite/blog.co.uk )that contained my website homepage copy and pasted onto it 4 times ( I was practising text wrapping) Next thing is, my site vanishes from google having been No 1 locally for 6 years with little competition and for a very niche service. I've been told the blog page thing is nothing to do with it or maybe its a server issue whereby google crawled when the site was down or something - whatever - its a total mystery as to how an adequately put together site can just vanish......

    To be honest if i was you i would have got a new host and took your existing domain added maybe a "-" and had a fresh site re-indexed, it would have been quicker,

    Because what is irritating is your losing work now from the google problem

    They could take ages to sort your site out, dont mean to be negative

    sorry you just lost me there, why would I want to go with a new host?

    negative doesnt bother me, lack of info either way definately does:)

    means there are links to pages that google has found, but the pages don't exist on your site....

    Create a new template and name it 404.shtml, and put in in your website route ;) (.shtml not .html) :cool:

    One thing I am doing is creating blank pages with the now 404 pages and 301'ing them to the homepage :D

    edit: check the date on them, as I have some from february in mine... only take notice if they are semi-recent (GW doesn't update often)

    ok, heres a challenge;), imagine I don't know anything about the internet and how websites work etc etc . Post the above again in a way that someone like me can understand cos I dont understand a word of it:);)

    Hehe.... Take your index.html file remove all the content (text & images) and then add something like
    Code: 
    <h1>404 error - Page does not exist</h1>
 <p>The page seems to be missing, click <a href="index.html">here</a> to go back to the homepage.</p>

    This way, the page will look like the rest of your site (see it on my site by going to garethgillman.co.uk/404.shtml). Save the page as 404.shtml and upload onto your website in the same place as your files e.g. index.html

    Ignore the second part ... I was just rambling :D

    It's only the one page that has gone missing. It is in the index but not cached. Even a exact match on the page title returns the page below some results that are a poor match.

    Note as well that the 'about us' page ranked well not the homepage for a particular search. The homepage was indented but has now gone. The about page has dropped down the ranking. So it wasn't the errant blog post that has caused the problem, something else appears to have gone awry.

    As earl suggests, if Google gets itself in a muddle there isn't really much you can do except change the pages to attract the attention of the search engine again.

    The pages have been changed, the site has been pinged, as I said before Google takes its own sweet time.
    Due to the site not being updated regularly, google will come along when it feels like it, no amount of coercing seems to make a difference.
    Mark (Eagle) had a similar issue a while back, Google completely hit his site out the ballpark.
    Googlebot is not being blocked by the host either.

    If your site contains multiple pages with largely identical content, there are a number of ways you can indicate your preferred URL to Google. (This is called "canonicalization".) More information about canonicalization.
    However, in some cases, content is deliberately duplicated across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic. Deceptive practices like this can result in a poor user experience, when a visitor sees substantially the same content repeated within a set of search results.
    Google tries hard to index and show pages with distinct information. This filtering means, for instance, that if your site has a "regular" and "printer" version of each article, and neither of these is blocked with a noindex meta tag, we'll choose one of them to list. In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we'll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved. As a result, the ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results.

    I don't know if this is related but I'll just relay what happened to me (about 18 months ago). I had (still have) a domain (a single web page with very little on it) and for a couple of years I was constantly checking its ranking in Google for some quite specific words. It was always in the top 5 listed. So about 18 months ago I registered the domain with Google webmaster as I was about to do some work on it.

    The next day it completely disappeared from the google rankings! It was 6 months before it gradually started rising through the page listings...

    I have since been quite suspicious of Google :|

    A warning from the gods,all that glitters is not gold.;)

    Googles tools are so inaccurate.I would suggest using other tracking means where possible and as pointed out can affect your rankings.

    for SEO whoson or statscounter are good products.

    ** straight out of my adwords book **

    1) Click the settings tab
    2) In networks, devices and extensions section, click the edit link to the right of the list of networks / devices
    3) click the radio button (round one) next to Let me Choose and then remove the check from the button next to Content Network
    4) Ignore Google's drop down warning, click ok then save.

    What I am thinking of is running 2 campaigns, content network only and search only.
    I can then see which gives me the better ROI and can tweak them as I need.

    Yup, steer clear of all Google products if possible. Get rid of the toolbar, gmail, analytics, webmaster tools, igoogle and all the rest. Google can seriously mess with your site in an effort to be helpful.

    Although a hard lesson learned, it does show that small businesses need some kind of development platform for their websites other than just a live environment. It's all too easy to click and computers make things fubar quicker ;)
    It does add extra time in getting things out, however you can see that time (and money) can be saved.

    I akin Google to the Goa'uld ;)

    The blog urls were put into webmaster tools to remove.

    Matt, you are in google.com here but not .co.uk (web or uk results) (yet, (suspect the rest will catch up in time)) and it's your about page that is showing rather than the domain. Needs more backlinks in a nutshell.
