I don't think registering a trademark in the UK is that difficult. I did it for a previous company and it was literally fill in a form, post it and wait a few months to get your certificate. OK, I used a solicitor who did it for me to make sure the form was filled in properly, but that was pretty much how it worked. I wouldn't do more than the UK unless you really wanted to protect your name outside the UK.
