    What's the best way gauge/measure what people are searching?

    I'm interested in cars, car parts, and car related products generally.


    EG
    Searches with just "vauxhall zafira" against people searching "vauxhall zafira 1.8" against people searching "vauxhall zafira 1.8 1999"

    Also searches with "lexus is200" against "lexus is 200"

    Any help appreciated.

    You could use the Google Adword tool, would be a bit tedious and dry....but would give you a decent jist of the amount of searches being done.
    You have to do individual searches for each make, but it does give a decent breakdown for different variations.

    Volume to conversion is a very fine line.

    eg (hypothetical)
    ford > 1000 searches > 50p click > £500 > 10 conversion > cost per conversions = £50
    ford focus > 1000 > 75p click > £750 > 20 conversions > cost per conversion = £37.50
    ford focus 1.8 1000 > £1.00 click > £1000 > 50 conversions > cost per conversion = £20.00

    Traffic volume may be less. Cost may be higher, but the conversions is the important figure

    So what you are saying is that a refined search is worth more than a generic one?
    By filtering out the Mondeos, the Fiestas, the Focuses etc...you are in fact getting only what you want in traffic and the end conversions work out more favourable.
    Am I understanding this correctly?

    Thats correct. Its the biggest issue when PPC is managed.
    The key factor is conversions not traffic volume.
