i am no.1 page for every key phrase but my main one why?

Most of the sites in page 1 for my key phrase (organic listings) dont seem to be optimised for it eg key phrases not in page title, description, page content etc. there is someone with only 3 very small pages who is no.2 on page 1! They only mention half the key phrase in the title page, full phrase once in the description and half of the phrase in the home page too.
(by half the phrase i mean just two of the words in sequence in a 3 word phrase)

The only thing i can see is that my description only has half the key phrase in sequence eg if keyphrase= "roof services bradford" words from my key phrase in my description are dotted around eg roof blah blah bradford blah blah blah roof blah blah services bradford blah.

Will this be the reason?
 
Where are you? if you have overdone your SEO you could be hit with a 30 penalty, which means no matter what you do you will not get above position 31 in the SERP's.

Alternatively it could be that they have more value in their inbound linking footprint for that phrase.

haha I wondered why one of my test sites whent to page 31 lmao

What is an inbound linking footprint?
Does that basically mean they have used an anchor text link using the key phrase eg 'for all your roofing needs try roof sevices bradford the best roofer in bradford!' from other sites to their site?

(i am on 2nd page halfway)

If you are on page 1 for most of your targeted terms, and page 2 for your primary term, then you have done well in a short amount of time, congratulations.

I would say that I'm a bit confused what your primary term is, because what is in your home page title isn't similarly reflected in what is in your H1 tag or in the content, so it is difficult to say what is your primary term (tree surgeon area or tree services area). With title and h1 tags there is more prominence for words nearer the start (nearer to the left), and in your title and h1 these words are targeting different terms.

It could also simply be that one term is more competitive than the other and targeted by more sites.

Google is supposed to use around 200 factors, onsite and offsite, in determining ranking, so it wont be down to one single thing why some competitor sites are higher. If you cannot see much in the way of onsite optimisation (although website age can help), then look for offsite factors, like good relevant inbound links. These good links do not have to be anchor text links, but they need to come from pages which overall are relevant and optimised for similar terms. For example, in the case of one of your competitors they have a good yell directory inbound link from a relevant page in the directory.

You can find out some external pages that provide inbound links for a site by typing the following link command into google or yahoo's search box:

link:domainname

Google only lists a few important ones, whereas yahoo (site explorer) lists more.

'let's slip' ? If it was a secret, then I wouldn't have mentioned it would I? :p

Google has a range of little penalties such as this, they are common knowledge among SEO's. This isn't an SEO forum though, it is a business forum and as a result the SEO replies are often 'dumbed down' (no insult to members intended). The terminology used on this forum by myself is a mile away from that i would use on an out and out SEO debate on an SEO forum as the knowledge levels there are completely different to here (as an average I mean, as there are highly skilled SEO's here as well).

What I am trying to say is that as this situation has not come up previously, I have not had reason to mention it, but OOP's (over optimisation penalties) are common knowledge. You overdo it, you need to back off, as pushing on will only make matters worse.

can you show me a way to do an external search on what my h1 tag is?
i thought my h1 had exactly the same content as my home page title?

my main term is tree srgeon area but closely followed by treee service/s area.

i thought i have mentioned 'tree srgeon area' in quite a few places in my home pages content?
Also, my home page title has all of these words in- 'tree surgn area treee servicees'?

Ps all the spelling mistakes are deliberate as lets just say i have learned a lesson from previously typing in my keywords all over a thread!

Presumably that is per page? Is there any way to tell if a particular page has been hit by that penantly (as opposed to just ranking > 30 because there are 30 'better' pages ahead of yours)?
