Yeah, just designing a website for someone and I recommended lots of white space, still could not resist throwing a bit of light grey in though http://www.crystalcleandriveways.com

Fine for a poet, but if you're in business, you don't case about "first class design", you care about sales.
If you're using paid advertising, there's a clear trade-off between white space and keeping down the cost of the ad. And a lot of white space usually doesn't pay for itself.
