Business mileage?

Hi all,

I am a bit confused about working out business mileage?

I am about to go self employed as a window cleaner, & going to go with the 40 per mile option, but am I only allowed to count the mileage between my 1st & last job of the day, or can I include mileage from my home to the 1st job, & also mileage from my last job & back home?

Many thanks.

Ian.

Why not ask your accountant?
I always accounted for every business mile from home and had no problems - but that was a little while ago.

The whole mileage, as you would not be making the journey if it was not for your business. You are probably thinking of the 'home to work' rule for those with a permanent place of employment.

Keep some sort of log, with dates, addresses, postcodes maybe, so you can justify the claim if ever asked.

Some of the online route finders give mileages and are handy for working out your claim.

And as said above, check with your accountant, as they will be the first to answer if queried.

Hi again,

Many thanks for both of your replies.

I have not got an accountant yet, but will arrange this soon & try & find out for sure.

Thanks again.

Ian.

Incidentally the HMRC mileage rate has been sitting at 40p per mile for about ten years now. It is absolutely scandalous that it has not been raised considering what has happened to petrol prices during that period.

Is there any way of lobbying for change? I am in the FSB and I raised it on their forum but apparently they are not very supportive. They use this rate for their employees and it would mean an increase in their expenses.
