Not at all good on dialup, I have found that on a 2 meg or faster connection it is very good, I have also found that sometimes if there is a lot of cpu usage going on then skype jutters like mad (very strange though, because skype-skype whilst gaming is very clear and games are very cpu intensive indeed)

Just started using Skype and I love it. It integrates with outlook to so you can call direct from the contact screen.
The only problems I really have is when calling mobiles. But not all mobiles.
I recommend it. Much cheaper than getting a separate business line for a home office.
There's Google talk too which sounds OK.

voip is gd but we must pay but skype is free but if i have the choice i will choose to use voipUrban Space said:Skype's not so good on dialup! Skype is no good for business users generally, yeah it's great if you have a mic and want to talk to someone free in australia.
But for a business solution use, Skype won't get though most firewalls. And people still want proper handsets.
I think VoIP is the future - but it has to be used with Broadband. It has had teething probs, but seems ok now. We have it at my small business. VoIP not only gives cheap calls, but my company didn't have to buy a PBX which costs loads. But we have great features too. The company we went for is voicenet-solutions, who have cisco phones.
There are quite a few companies around but we did our research and are happy - some don't seem to have the tech side sorted.

Here's an article we put together which might give a preview of one possible direction, free video conferencing. It explains how to achieve this using a webcam and Skype.
Most small businesses would benefit from this, so it's likely that Skype will seek to build on this sort of technology.
