Fields, roadsides, gardens!
Another boring computer question!:|

I am thinking of buying one of the many PC Booster clean up downloads.

My computer is slow and sometimes unstable.

Has anyone used one, do they work, and if so, which is the best one?

There seems to be so many, and I do not want to throw money away if they do not work.

Also want to make sure its reputable, and does not install a virus onto my computer.

Thanks

Poppy

Check out some of the freestuff like Comodo System Cleaner and there are plenty more.

I always go to tucows.com

But before that, have you defragmented the hard drive?

Is there enough free space on your hard drive?

Have you got shedloads of unncecessary software running upon start up and hogging memory? Stuff like skype..msn..etc

Is your anti-virus scan scheduled daily and working in the background? - this can really slow the machine.

Sorting that out will do a lot to improve the performance.

Gizmodo can also be a useful source of freeware before you start spending.
Check here.

Revo is not too bad to clear out all those clever sounding things you thought you'd try, and only used once. (Altho' I know a techy who disagrees...).
Then, as above, defrag, tune-up, reg clean, and organize your Startup. A lot of what they do is at best marginal, so I don't think it's worth spending any money; the freebies are good enough..

i use tune up utilities and it does a grand job for me

couple of things to do right away though - use the windows standard disk cleanup and then disk defragmenter

as mentioned above, cut out the number of programs you have running at start up - that really slows things down (again, if oy get tune up you can use their start up manager to activate/deactivate programs at start up)

also, download spybot - and schedule it to run a weekly update/scan. This cuts out all your adware and spyware stuff.

i'd also download adblocker onto your web browser, it prevents ads being shown, so speeds up your browsing.

Also, use mozilla firefox and thinderbird instead of microsoft internet explorer and outlook

uninstall any programs you don't use

should be a good start

A word of warning - if you are going to try some free software, make sure you download it from a reliable source. It's not uncommon for hackers to tout free spyware scanners / performance software loaded with trojans.

Thanks everyone..

I have taken on board the comments and started the New Year with a good tidy up.

I had several drivers that needed updating (all done).
I did a good Reg clean and sort (that got rid of loads of unwanted stuff).

The computer is set to defrag automatically every now and again, so that was alright.

Loads of space/memory so that seems fine, I am going to go through some files and delete unwanted items.

How do you cut down on the number of programmes at the start up, as my computer takes ages!

I spyware check regularly.

I have also altered settings to delelete TIF straight away, I did seem to have a lot of them stored.

Many Thanks

Poppy

Download Ccleaner - you can get it from the Computeractive web site.
As well as being a very good cleaner it gives you the option to decide what programs start up automatically.

Google each entry to make sure it is not an essential process - most things you can get rid of are auto-updaters for things like quicktime, realplayer, msn etc.
